Report: Saito drawing interest

Posted by Chad Finn, Globe Staff June 16, 2009 03:07 PM

Brad Penny and Manny Delcarmen have been the pitchers most often named in trade rumors as the Red Sox try to figure out how to best utilize their overstocked staff. But according to one report today, Takashi Saito could be the Sox hurler who is eventually dealt.

According to FoxSports.com's Ken Rosenthal, the Red Sox spoke the the Texas Rangers about dealing Saito, the 39-year-old relief pitcher with a lifetime 2.00 ERA, in exchange for first baseman/designated hitter Hank Blalock.

While that deal was put on hold after the Rangers slugger Josh Hamilton suffered a hernia -- Blalock's presence in the lineup became essential after Hamilton was sidelined for what is expected to be six weeks -- Rosenthal noted that Saito has been in demand by a number of teams.

Saito, who spent three seasons as a highly successful closer for the Dodgers before suffering an elbow injury last season, has a 2.42 ERA and two saves in 23 appearances in his first season with the Red Sox.

  1. Seriously? Someone in the Sox front office must just be messing with Ken to see what nonsense he might report. I'm not against trading Saito, but Blalock is just flat out terrible, his best years were five and six years ago. Hank Blalock?! Talk about anti-Sox hitters. Seriously?! THAT Blalock?

If the Sox traded Saito for Hank Blalock, not only would I throw up in my mouth, but I might consider revoking my fandom of the Red Sox and would probably have to stop producing the Officially Unofficial Red Sox Podcast. The good news is that I see no possible way this story has any legs.

  1. I would make this trade in a heartbeat.
Blalock is terrible against lefties but eats righties for breakfast and has hit .400 at Fenway park the last 3 years.

  1. I'd prefer to see Manny Del-Nightmare traded first. He seems to have good "stuff" but perhaps not the mental makeup to be a Red Sox pitcher. He needs to work on his confidence elsewhere - let's get something worthwhile for him now before there are too many more meltdowns.

  1. Hmmm... Blalock... a first baseman/DH... Wait a minute... might be a good fit after all! ;- )

  1. I'd say go for it. While Mike Lowell has been a pleasant surprise at third base, you never know if and when he could go down. Having a utility player like Blaylock would allow the Red Sox to plug Blalock in at third to give Lowell rest, as well as put in the lineup to give Ortiz some time off. Saito is a oe year deal, but Blalock could be a corenerstone utility player, possibly even Lowell's replacement at third base as the years progress.

  1. I wouldn't give up any pitching until we see how Smoltz is doing; Saito's value will keep rising as the deadline nears. I would love to see the Sox deal Lugo and a prospect for Marco Scutaro, even if they have to swallow salary, but the Jays would be crazy to deal him. He was a great utility man and clutch hitter for the A's and all he needed was an opportunity to play every day to blossom into an All Star candidate. He's only making $1.1M and has a couple of years on his contract. If only (sigh)

  1. We would not put Blalock at third. Youk would go to third and Blalock would go to first.

  1. don't you all think it might be a wee bit early to start dumping pitching? Over all we've got arguably the best pitching staff (starting / relief) in baseball. We just passed the middle of June. Settle down folks. Let's get closer to the trading deadline so we can get optimum value. We have the second best record in baseball with papi in a horrendous slump. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. And there ain't too much that needs fixing.

  1. What the hell are we going to do with Blalock? LOL. Sure, put him over at first base, standing next to Youk! The last thing we need is another bloated contract for a player that hasn't performed in several years. We have injured players. We don't need more. Something is wrong between the screws with this Rosenthal character. He probably heard a couple drunks in the mens room in Texas talking about it, was approaching a deadline and decided to report on it. LOL .

  1. You know what really held up that trade the Sox isisted that Lugo be included for a box of brand new unused MLB labled baseballs.

  1. FoxSports??????? An excellent rumor but what would we do with an overpaid (6.2 mil) 250 average, played a total of 123 games in 07, 08 DH??? I wish the SOX would talk to the Twins. They have a rookie catcher and a DH we could actually use and they only have 4 starters.
