Buchholz will start Friday

Posted by Adam Kilgore, Globe Staff July 12, 2009 04:43 PM

Clay Buchholz will start for the Red Sox Friday night against the Blue Jays, the team's first game after the All-Star break, Sox manager Terry Francona announced after this afternoon's game at Fenway Park. With two Red Sox starters in the All-Star Game (Tim Wakefield and Josh Beckett), Francona said the plan is for Buchholz to make just one start with the big club.

After Buchholz's start Friday, the rotation will continue with Brad Penny, Jon Lester, John Smoltz, Beckett, and Wakefield. Buchholz is 7-2 with a 2.36 ERA in 16 starts for Pawtucket.

  1. Can you say "SHOWCASE"????

  1. Perfect. This is a great time to start Clay and see if he is ready for the big leagues again. The depth of this staff will allow for little experiments like this and hopefully glimpse the future of the rotation. If anyone falters Dice K will be ready and refreshed. It surely is a nice problem to have.True depth is a situation most clubs would covet.
The Sox are not televised down here when they play mediocre teams so I checked the gamecast ,noted that Josh was dominating and tuned in to one of my favorite movies-Fever Pitch.I rarely watch romantic screwball comedies but I love this one.It stays true to the title and keeps everything else in the background.

  1. They're not trading Buch...Penny and Smoltz are short-term commitments...Buch is the future

  1. It will take more than Buccholz for the Sox to get Halladay from Toronto (Daniel Bard? Lars Anderson?) and I doubt they're willing to give up that much. I don't see the point in trading for another arm--even one as good as Halladay--when a bat is what they really need more.

  1. Do NOT even talk about trading a young arm when SOX have so many questions for 2010 with graybeards in Smoltz and Penny and even Wake. And then there is the $100 miliion flop ...Dice-K. Beckett, Lester, Buchholz and maybe Masterson as starters ... now that's something I look forward tp.

  1. Doubt it. Jays are gonna want a lot more than just Bucholz and I really don't think Toronto will trade within the division unless they got a ridiculous offer

  1. or to test him out on the big league level before they decide to trade that bum Penny

  1. Lee (#4) has it right. This is a creative way to give Clay a start with little pressure (he KNOWS he's going back down regardless, so this isn't his big opportunity to stay with the team). It also gives Wake and Beckett a breather after their AS appearances. A win all around, and a good move.

  1. Trade Masterson, he's the one that hasn't earned his keep.

  1. can you say, Stanley

  1. Trading Masterson and/or Delcarmen would be ok by me.

  1. Sox have the best prospects to offer Toronto by far. The Jays haven't had a sniff since the Joe carter days. If they can p/u Buck, Lars & other top teir (preferably Delcarmen) it would be perfect for our second half push!

  1. DOC............is headed to the Philies, because they have the resources and he won't be in the division. Forget about the Yankees and the Sox it's not going to happen, Theo is too conservative for Ricciardi's taste, besides we need another bat worse than another starter at the moment.

  1. Keep this guy and send down Masterson. There is no reason for wasting this arm.

  1. No knucklehead would trade this guy within the division so forget it. Either Masterson or DelCarmen can go if need be.

  1. Of course the rotation might shake a bit but Penny, Smoltz and Lester would be ready to go and Wake and Beckett would follow nicely in either order. There has to be more to it than just keeeping the rotation in order.

  1. Gotta make the move. We traded at the time top prospects Pavano and Armas Jr to get Pedro. We traded Hanley Rameriz to get Beckett. Gotta give up some to get some and Halladay is a good as they come. Imagine a top 3 of Beckett-Halladay & Lester. Still got Dice K too. DO IT!

  1. 1) If we trade for Halliday we don't NEED Buchholz.
    2) The deal that gets it done is Ellsbury & Buchholz for Wells and Halliday....& if you ignore the money it's a great deal. ELLSBURY is grossly overrated imo. HE CAN'T lead off and he can't knock in runs.
    3) With deal stated in number 2 we can still trade Delcarmen for a bat And have Bowdein as our depth.
    4) Deal 2 will NEVER happen because Theo won't spend the $$$....it's the same reason we don't have Tex...don't believe the spin he went to highest bidder.

  1. Pedro was 26 when the Sox traded for him. Beckett was 25 (turned 26 that first year). I would love to see Halladay pitching for the Sox instead of against him but you have to consider he is 32, has had injury issues this year and last year (he only started 17 games last year). He will throw a lot on innings but he's not getting any younger.

As for the movie Fever Pitch being true to the title, it was originally a book. About soccer, not baseball.

  1. Seriously, wouldn't Buchholz's value be greater by not showcasing? If he was going to be traded, it would seem that they'd leave him in the minors and let them all salivate. Why "road test" him now? His no-hitter was the "showcase." Sox FO must be looking at something else, like getting last year out of his mind and putting him solidly back on track. Pitching is not the Sox's problem this year. If the postseason is in their future, which seems reasonable to expect, Beckett, Lester and pick a third starter for the best match up from the "best of the rest" 'is pretty awesome. All the other starters move to long relief. Formidable.

  1. Forget Clay...the Hankees are gonna give up that swine Chamberlain and the Jays will be stupid and make that trade. Jo Jo Joba will stink it up north of the border instead. Question is what else will the Hankees throw in there.

  1. Why even bring up Buchholz if you are just giving him one start? Hopefully, they are bringing him up as a final test before they trade Penny or move Smoltz to the bullpen.

  1. I picked him up. He'll be in the bigs somewhere soon.

Posted by PKM July 13, 09 11:24 PM
  1. buchholz is their future aint no way he is gonna be traded. plus the jays wouldnt trade halladay within the division at any rate.

GO MARINERS!!!!! SPENDING SPREE TIME (but not on halladay)
