Nomar gets emotional
Nomar Garciaparra welled up with tears as he talked about his love of the Boston fans. Garciaparra, who spoke to the media for about 20 minutes this afternoon, returns to Boston for the first time since being dealt by the Red Sox to the Cubs in a three-team deal that helped the Sox win the '04 World Series.
Garciaparra said he regretted not being able to say what he felt to the fans because he was traded while the team was in Minneapolis, and he was asked what he would say to the fans if he could.
"I love 'em. I love the way they treated me," said Garciaparra, whose eyes were filled with tears. "I'm getting emotional because when I was gone Boston fans were everywhere. I can't say how many times I heard, 'Thank you. Thank you for all you did.' Even today I was walking down Newbury Street a guy came up to me and shook my hand and looked me in the eye and said 'Thank you for all you did.' And I just looked at him and said, 'No ... Thank you.'
"I can't believe what a wonderful experience I had here."
Did he wish he could have played his whole career here?
"Always. The minute I put that uniform on I dreamed I was gonna start my career in Boston and end my career in Boston. I still have that dream. The only difference from the original dream is that I wasn't supposed to put another uniform on. But that dream is still there."
The way it ended? Did he wish it could have been different?
"I think what often gets lost, we have so much passion and emotion surrounding this organization, what gets lost was the business side. The business side isn't always great," Garciaparra said.

I hope Theo brings Nomar back. I don't know where he'd play, but I think all of us as Red Sox fans want to see Nomar back. And judging by his comments, I think he'd love to make a triumphant return to Fenway Park and The Nation.
Who's with me?
Nomah was AWESOME
Plus he had the perfect Boston name
Bostonians loved to say "Noomahhhh"s gonna Pahhk it"
Without injuries he could have been one of the best offensive shortstops ever.
Good man.
I've been a passionate fan of the Red Sox since the mid 70's (I'm 38) always proud of the tradition regardless of their "luck/fate" prior to 2004. The Nomar image that sticks with me is him with Ted Williams at the Fenway allstar game not the alleged "quitting" against the Yankees. I agree with the trade (the results speak for themselves). However, I am crossing my fingers that the fans in this A's series show their usual class and cheer a good former Red Sox player. I didn't like his departure circumstances, but looking at the whole Red Sox body of work he was important to the team.
Pretty sure he was more than ok leaving Boston at the end of his run- unless every single report was false. Nice try though, 5! Wish you were here! Bring him back, son!
Wow - what a testimony to great the fans of RED SOX NATION!! Our passion for this great sport is enjoyed like no other team out there!! We respect the great men who have come thru Fenway and support the ones we never wanted to leave!
Thanks Nomar for your love of this great city and to the true fans like myself! Who knows you may just retired in that Sox uniform!
I love nomar & all the hits & homeruns ....but im sorry....he was pissed that 4 yrs for 60 million wasnt enough...boy i bet he wishes he accepted it now !! & plus he QUIT on the sox in '04 .....
He was on roids.
Nomar was on the juice. He's the cliche of steroid users. Broken down tendons and joints. If that SI cover didn't convince anyone that he juiced, then all of the injuries he's sustained which are typical of steroids, should.
I was a Nomar fan, but it is what it is. He should get a standing O for what he did in Boston, but I, personally, couldn't care any less about Nomar retuning here. I felt the same way about Clemens when the Sox front office made that ridiculous video tape begging Clemens to return. I hope Nomar gets his due, but we don't need him back here just so he can fulfill his "dream" of finishing here. He should have been a better teammate in 2004 and he would probably still be here. I have to think their first choice was not to have O-Cab over Nomar. He must've forced their hand.
Much love for Nomah
Gotta miss the man
I remember him sending back my baseball card signed, when I was just a kid and he was a rookie coming out of Pawtucket.
It's still my treasure to this day.
Welcome back, Nomar. We still love you here.
Trade Lugo for Nomah! A half season and then he'll probably retire...as he should, a member of the Boston Red Sox.
Love ya Nomar!!!! Wish you could have been here in '04 and '07 to celebrate!!!! Maybe they'll get you back for a finale one day!!!!!!!!!!!!! You're the BEST No-MAH!!!
Bring Nomar back immediately..
He's showing class today.......
Unfortunately my most vivid memory is him sitting in the dugout while other Sox are standing, then seeing Jeter dive into the stands for a ball.................
quite unfortunate
I will always love Nomar. I would like nothing more then to see him back in a Red Sox uniform.
In 2005 I went to a Cubs game and spoke to Nomar during batting practice. I had a WS shirt on and thanked him. He was so geniune, and said he only wished he could have celebrated in boston with us.
the sox offered nomar $60 million for 4 years....if he would have accepted, the business side would have been great for both parties...
I usually try to avoid cross-sport analogies, but I can't help thinking how much Nomar was to the Sox what Bledsoe was to the Pats.
I used to love Nomar. He's really the straw that broke the camel's back in terms of me coming to the conclusion that today's players are all about the money. He could have spent his whole career in Boston. But, 5 years and $60 million weren't enough for him.
Trading Nomar is the smartest things the Sox have done in the Theo era (and they've done a lot of smart things).
Andy - are you nuts? Nomar was so unhappy in Boston towards the end, and his skills have greatly diminished. All the years of juicing have hurt him. He didn't juice? All of his many injuries are classic steroid injuries.
Nomar Garciaparra is "emotional" because he turned down an offer from the Sox for $60 million over 4 years! He hasn't made anything close to that since.
Good riddance Nomar!
Oh PLEEEEAAAZE, this MAMON was saying the same thing about Dodger Fans not too long ago. Parra was sooo glad to come home to his root with his people!!! YADA YADA YADA YADA........don't believe the hype, it's just lip service for your bostonians.....

Nomar is a Red Sox player for life and a true Icon of sports in Beantown. He typified hard work, skill and desire and played every play as it were his last one in a Sox uniform. I will always look at it as a shame that he didn't get to taste the spoils of at least one Championship as a member of the Sox - we all know he deserved it. Nomaaaahh!
Nomar is a jerk....I was lucky enough to get early admission ( before the gates open to the general public) and take my kids to a game so that they could interact with kids that were the friends of players, owners friends etc. Nomar could not be bothered, he danced around and acted like a premadonna (sp) and later that season he got traded. I guess management thought the same as I did. Nomar had an inflated opinion of himself.....I'm glad he's gone and championshipless.
The Sox have gotten their two World Series and so, all should be forgiven. If Nomar wants to come back, bring him back where he began his career and let him try and end his career the way it started. He was the best Red Sox shortstop ever.
I would not change 2004 for anything but when I saw Nomar in Walnut Creek, Ca (outside of Oakland) I couldn't help but to pull over and give him a big thank you. We wouldn't have 2004 without trading him but Nomar will always be in our hearts.
"I hope Theo brings Nomar back"
Why? He can't play anymore. Yes, he was a Boston sports icon for a time, but in the end, he couldn't get it done here. The results since his trade speak for themselves.
Superb 3 minute standing "O" for Nomar when he came up to bat for the first time. Class act by the Fenway Faithful for a class act ball player.
I wonder if Mia Hamm was also in Nomar's dream!?
#18 has a great point. Nomar was the face of the franchise during his Sox tenure, just like Bledsoe was for the Patriots. Both exits were shocking, but I'm very happy to see the huge standing O that Nomah got this evening. Great stuff!
Would love to break out my #5 Jersey again at Fenway again.
i too have a dream...it is hard to remember but i think it has something to do with 15 million per year...yes, it was a beautiful dream...but only that, a dream.
Why stop at Nomar? Bring back Pedro and Roger, even Fred Lynn! What? They can't play anymore either?
Very definition of" 'bad apple". Selfish. Only concerned about personal stats. Contaminates those around him. Stay away.
Bring Nomah back! He ca nstill pahhk it ovah the
wahhl.
"bring back Nomar"??!! Yeah, maybe we can also sign Roger, get Mo Vaughn back in a Sox uniform, get Wade Boggs, make an offer to Canseco, trade for Damon, . . . and have a nostalgia tour.
Kills me how none of you bozos care about Sox players using steroids when they are on the team. You're all over it with your "steroid injury" comments now though.
Hold the Kleenex. I can't stand Nomah Greediaparra... I'm so glad that we shipped his buns off to nowhereland. His arrogance in '04 got him rightfully punted. I'm also glad he turned down the 4-years/$60 million deal that was on the table. He got exactly what he deserved: Nuttin' but a soccer playin' pussy.
If I saw Nomar out I'd buy him a beer. The guy was a class act and was a pleasure to watch/cheer for.
I don't care if Nomah or anyone else was on steroids. Who cares? They changed the rules now and you can't use steroids anymore. Enforce the rules and that is that. Nomah was a class act tonight and we all should thank him for his past RedSox heroics and for the trade that got us our first World Series win in 86 years. Thank you Nomah your Boston fans appreciate you. NOOMMAAAHHH
I'd just as soon have Nomaaahhh on the bench, subbing in at 1B while Lowell is on the DL. Jeff Bailey is a disaster.
I think he could play third, depending on what happens, but he'd have to come in and compete for a job, and it wouldn't be a given that he'd make the team, so I don't see it being worth the money. I suppose he could be a backup infielder and play some first and third (could he also play second? I know he can't play shortstop anymore)
The short answer: I don't think it's realistic at all to expect Nomar back.
Though Nomar had some great years in Boston, he remains the poster child for everything that can go wrong when athletes take steroids. He broke down because his body couldn't stand all the chemical abuse. The roids might have helped him in the short term, but he paid the price in the end. I even wonder if his moodiness was due to soime sort of roid rage. After all, he was miserable most of the time during his last few years in Boston. Thanks for some great memories, Nomar, but don't you wish now you had stayed off the juice?
We still love you Nomar.
"...Class Act by the Fenway Faithful..." You all are a bunch of pompous, 'B'andwagon fans. Your joke of a Nation is quick to forget the many players that got you where you are today. You think you all would be where you are without Manny? Damon? You all make me sick with your holier than thou attitudes. You win two championships over 90+ years and all of a sudden, you can sit here and blog who is deserving to come back and join your soon to be behind the Yankees team? Keep smokin the pipe RSN...You'll need something to ease the pain when NYY takes the pennant.
Bring Nomar Garciaparra back to Boston.

nomah gave up on us
Ok, so I read all of the statements above mine and I can agree and disagree with most to all. #1 From 97 (AL ROtY) to 03 Nomar or in Bostonian language Nomah could do no real wrong. He held his own with some of the best s.s. in the league Jeter, A-rod (juice I know but whatever now), Tejada, Visquel, etc... He carried the team for a long time with occasional help from the likes of Vaughn (yeah I know) Everett, Valentine, Martinez, Urbina, El Guapo, Merloni, etc... But the ending in 03 spoiled things. We all know F'N Aaron Boone, Pedro in the 7th, Grady, etc. But right around then Mia got in the picture and all of a sudden Nomar and Mia wanted to relocate to the west coast. Ok Hello Chi-town, not exactly where they wanted but eventually came La and Oakland. Most of us remember that Nomar may or may not have quit on us in 04 with his "injuries" to his wrist (some legit, some not), ankle, and other various "injuries”, and of course the straw that broke the camels back, the damn Yankee game when poor ole Jeter did a header into the first row (too bad :) Everyone second guessed Tito for not putting Nomar in and for waiting too damn long to put Trot Nixon into the game (like in the 9th when they had a great opportunity, not the 11th when there was slim chances). All of that leads to the trading deadline and Nomar kind of got his wish (Mia's wish) and he left. Don’t forget the Sox gave him a World Series ring, and a cut of the winnings. He was happy sort of and yes he did break down from steroids but so didn’t tons of players such as, Damon, Foulke, Manny, A-rod, Giambi, Clemens, Pettitte, Tejada, and the list goes on and on. Yeah it would be cool to see Nomah come back for a one year deal down the road to finish his career but that’s if Mia lets him. Good luck buddy maybe we’ll see ya soon.
To the deuche bag who posted #31 RSN's a joke, fucking faggot cant even put his real fucking name on there, fucking homo. Go back to fucking NY and suck Damons shrunken balls. The fucking NYY are NOT going to win the fucking pennant theyre not even going to fucking win the wild card, theyre pitching is a fucking joke. Fuck off dirt bag if i ever see you in real life i will fucking kick your ass all the fucking way back to the shit hole you call home NY
firstly - could yankee fans and everyone else that doesnt have a real contributing opinion just stop. really. i don't go on new york papers and poo on any of them. enough. the comments are stupid and useless.
like the ones who "remember nomar quitting....." and "he was juicing" and the contract crap. honestly. the puritan, holier than thou red sox fan crap.
nomar carried the sox for the better part of the late nineties up to 2003. it was obvious tonight how all of fenway and myself want to remember nomar for. i dont care if he didnt sing and dance for my kid , he played ball. good enough for me.
DO NOT bring him back!! REMEMBER HE QUIT ON THE TEAM!!! He made his bed and now he has to lie in it.
The only thing Nomar was chocked up about was leaving $25,000,000 on the table in '04 when the Sox offered him a 4 year deal. Please....this guy was the consumate spoiled brat athlete. Totally full of himself. (plus, he was probably juiced as well)
im a yankee fan that hates the red sox... but i have a great deal of respect for nomar... hes the only red sox player ive ever liked, and it would be nice to see him finish his career with the team he loves
I always liked Nomah, but no way we win in '04 with him at short. His attitude was a killer, and he simply didn't fit in with the fun bunch that year. No way they win. Remember, in 2003 the Sox offered Nomar 6 years/$90 million, but that wasn't good enough. Didn't come close to Jeter's $18 million per year. When the market settled in that off-season, the Sox came back and offered 5/$60 million. Nope, not good enough. It is a business, but he let ego get in the way. Again, I always loved how Nomar played the game, but can you imagine what the weight of that contract on a broken down player would have done to the Sox for the past 5 years?
Trade Lugo for Nomar!
Hey "RSN's a Joke" - that would be 2 Championships in 4 years (04, 07)
Nomahhhh is a quittahhhh................ stay in Oakland!
In regards to Nomar turning down the deal years ago, I heard on WEEI that he countered the offer, which is a normal procedure and the sox then took it off the table. I can't argue against him sitting during the Yankee series, but I do remember that I was sad to have him go, for he was one of my all time fav sox players. I would love to have him back!
I guess all forgiven on a player who gave up on his team in 04,no heart, crybaby pos, just like Papelbon is doing now, crying over a contract.WAH!!!!!!!!!!!!WAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Just liked I told in Montreal in 04 Nomar,YOU SUCK,the riods wore off and so did your career, good buy and good riddance.
The SI cover means he was on the Juice? That is just silly. Why because he was in good shape and had a pretty built chest. I have a chest like that and bench a measly 235. He wasn't really cut or anything. He looked like the average guy who went to the gym 4 or 5 days a week. I dont think he was on roids but who knows. Roids don't make you BA better. He never was a big HR hitter 20-30s. Alot of athletes just get injury prone after a certain age in all sports. Its not pee-wee these guys go hard and the 162 game season is a grind. I really felt bad for Nomar, I still liked him after we traded him and wanted him to do good it was sad to watch this guy go from the best SS in baseball to a DH Utillity player that plays 40 games a year
