Nomar gets huge ovation

Posted by Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff July 6, 2009 07:31 PM

While the Fenway crowd was giving Nomar Garciaparra a huge ovation as the former Sox star stood near home plate with his helmet off and hand patting his heart, it's funny to think that Garciaparra, who nowadays plays the corner infield positions and DH's - used mostly as a utility player - is precisely the type of player the Red Sox could use.

With Mike Lowell's sore hip and Mark Kotsay's sore calf, the Sox were forced to call up Aaron Bates from Pawtucket to start at first base.

The one thing that would deter the team from having interest is Garciaparra's calf problems, which have landed him on the DH this season.

According to Red Sox sources, Garciaparra inquired about a possible return to the Red Sox in the offseason but at the time the team was all set in that role. Now, things have changed.

  1. I agree if the money is right for both sides. Ted loved him,and that was enough for me. Would be a great story as well as help the team.

  1. youk an allstar???? What is Oakland's payroll as compared to Boston? Epstein should be ashamed for the product he has put on the field. There is absolutely no heart. They are stealing the money.Lugo was a great signing.

  1. Can we trade smoltz (absolutely pathetic again tonight) for NOMAR!!! YES!!!!

Awesome reaction by the fans to NOMAR!!!! Red Sox Nation are the GREATEST fans in the world!!!! (those great people in the stands tonight don't deserve the game they are seeing - poor starting pitching, anemic offense, and of course a Lugo error!!!

  1. The only other thing that might leave Sox management a little shy for the guy is that Nomar is one of the most injury prone players in the game. And older now.

  1. Jeff, you're smoking some good stuff, pass that over this way. What the heck are you talking about? I have nothing against the guy and he def deserved the standing ovation tonight for his time with the Red Sox but if Nomar wanted to stay in Boston he would've accepted the 4 yr/ $60 million offer the Sox already tried to give him.

I'll also never forget the memory of him sitting in the dugout, refusing to even pinch hit during that extra inning game at Yankee Stadium when Jeter dove into the stands and smashed his face to catch a foul ball. That was an example of leadership and determination.

  1. I'm not saying I want Nomar back, but it almost seems like righting a wrong. Almost. Maybe Nomar didn't handle things perfectly back then; he thought he was worth more. Maybe the Sox didn't handle things well back then. It was a tough decision to make from a public relations standpoint because fans loved Nomar, but they won a World Series. If you asked anyone, however, I think most fans would have preferred they win a World Series with him. It just wasn't to be.

  1. Leadership? Sitting on the bench when Jeter dove into the stands is leadership?

  1. I dont think we need him at all, but itd be a nice gesture to bring him back and he could help out still. Obviously, a generation of baseball fans including myself grew up with a team centered around Garciaparra and Pedro Martinez. Two legends in my mind.

  1. I was at the game tonight and it was obviouse the city loves a guy like this. Unfortunitly he was injured alot towards the end of his time here and there has to be something said for that. Not to mention in the last few years it looks like he was using a wiffle ball bat at the plate. But what you loose in production you make up for in effort and loyalty. He's not going to play everyday, and he's not going to be a star role player any more, and I think a return to the Red Sox would revitalize him and could be that extra bat off the bench or in a tough spot we need. Lugo for Normar straight up...on second thought, toss in Dice-walk in there too, we don't need him anyways

  1. I think you mean "'landed him on the DL", not DH.

  1. No way Theo brings him back

  1. Juicer. Pair him with Papi and they'd be perfect - two over the hill, off the juice so they can no longer hit designated hitters. Perfect.

  1. I was surprised by the ovation. When he left the Red Sox he was complaining that $60 million over four years wasn't enough. Faked an injury Manny style. Broke up a family after Mia Hamm's husband covered her financially until she it hit big time. Piece of garbage.

    Ouch!

  1. Let me say, first, I don't think the Red Sox have ever had an ambassador like Nomar. He was, in his prime, a franchise player any professional organization would dream to have. While they allowed Manny to be a selfish child who would check himself out of games, Nomar came to play and play through injuries and play though difficult contract negotiations.

That said, the Red Sox will never bring him back for the same reason that they traded him and for the same reason that they would not give him the contract that he wanted; he is not their kind of hitter. Nomar knows that 80% of the time a major league pitcher will throw you a first pitch strike and he swings at them. He swung at them with the fourth highest batting average in Red Sox history. This fact drives Theo crazy because you can't wear out a starting pitcher if you swing at the first pitch.

  1. Simply put, Nomar is no longer the superstar he once was, but in someways that's a good thing. I feel that his time away from the Sox and the injuries have humbled him some, in a good way.

I feel that if the Sox were to trade for him, they would be getting an excellent utility player that can play a variety of positions and add some strong veteran batting off the bench. And I don't think he'll have the mentality that he deserves to be an everyday player, but someone that can really help the team out in certain situations. I also agree it might do a lot to reenergize him and his career.
