Final: Red Sox 6, Orioles 5
Papelbon Gets Save (9:51, FINAL, 6-5 Red Sox)
Red Sox take the first in this three-game series as Papelbon collects his 27th save of the season. Papelbon threw eight pitches to pinch hitter Felix Pie before he struck out swinging. Roberts flied out to center and Reimold struck out swinging.
Smoltz ended up with his second win of the season.
No Insurance(9:36, MID 9, 6-5 Red Sox)
The Red Sox were unable to add to their lead. Josh Reddick made his Major League debut, pinch hitting for Rocco Baldelli. He grounded out to start the inning. Green struck out and Ellsbury flew out to left. Jonathan Papelbon will enter the game to try and pick up the save.
Lost Chances (9:32, END 8, 6-5 Red Sox)
Hideki Okajima got himself into trouble and then got himself out of it. He walked Huff and Wigginton back-to-back with one out. But Scott lifted a pop fly into foul territory, where Youkilis pulled it down for the second out. Then Wieters hit a line drive back at Okajima, who threw up his glove to snag the out.
No Change (9:21, MID 8, 6-5 Red Sox)
Bay's lead off single didn't amount to anything for the Sox as Lowell followed with a grounder that was turned for a double play. Varitek then flied out to center for the third out.
Ramirez In (9:13, END 7, 6-5 Red Sox)
Ramon Ramirez replaced Smoltz to start the inning. Ramirez gave up a single to Wieters. Izturis flied out to left. Roberts then hit a grounder back to Ramirez who juggled the ball and made a bad throw to second that gave the Orioles runners on first and second. But Reimold and Jones followed with ground balls that got Ramirez out of the inning.
Smoltz gave up five earned runs on eight hits in six innings.
Guthrie Out (9:04, MID 7, 6-5 Red Sox)
With two outs, Youkilis hit a two-run homer to deep left field, driving in Ellsbury, who reached on a single to left. Matt Albers was called in to face Ortiz, who hit a ball to deep center. Ortiz tried to stretch the hit into a double, but Adam Jones one-hopped a throw to easily get a sliding Ortiz. Guthrie left the game having tossed 6.2 innings, allowed nine hits and six earned runs.
Long Ball (8:48, END 6, 5-4 Orioles)
With one out, Markakis just missed a homer, knocking a double off of the top of the scoreboard in right. Huff then drove the first pitch he faced beyond the wall in center for the 200th homer of his career, which gave the Orioles a 5-4 lead. After Wigginton grounded out to short, Scott drove a shot to deep center field, where Ellsbury made an outstanding catch, slamming against the wall to end the inning.
Moving Along (8:43, MID 6, 4-3 Red Sox)
Lowell flied out to left, Varitek flied out to center and Baldelli was thrown out at first on a hard-hit ball to third.
Shutdown (8:32, End 5, 4-3 Red Sox)
Izturis and Roberts each flied out to center and Reimold struck out to end a quiet inning.
Sox Regain Lead (8:32, Mid 5, 4-3 Red Sox)
Ellsbury's solo homer to right moved the Red Sox back in front. Pedroia followed with a single but was caught stealing, with Youkilis at the plate. Youkilis eventually singled but was stranded when Ortiz and Bay each flied out.
Diving Smoltz (8:32, END 4, 3-3)
Smoltz managed to get Huff and Wigginton out to begin the inning. Then went all out on Scott's grounder. Smoltz dove to make the stop, but no one was at first to make the play. Wieters grounded out to second to end the inning.
No Luck (8:32, MID 4, 3-3)
Three up and three down for the Red Sox. Varitek popped out to center, Baldelli struck out and Green flied out to left.
Orioles Even Score (7:51, END 3, 3-3)
The one bad inning that has plagued Smoltz this season is back. Matt Wieters who reached on a single and moved to second on Cesar Izturis's bunt, scored the first run for Baltimore. Brian Roberts hit an infield single to short, but Green's throw to third skipped by Lowell's glove and allowed Wieters to score. Reimold then drove a homer to the opposite field that just reached over the wall in right to tie the score. Francona came out to contest the homer but after it was reviewed, the homer stood.
Ortiz Homers (7:51, MID 3, 3-0, Red Sox)
With Youkilis on base after a single, Ortiz cranked his 15th home run of the season to give the Red Sox a 3-0 lead. Bay was thrown out on a hard hit grounder and Lowell drove a fly ball to deep left field, where Reimold made the catch against the wall.
Orioles Stumped (7:51, END 2, 1-0 Red Sox)
Nick Markakis and Aubrey Huff led off with back-to-back singles. But Ty Wigginton hit into a double play that allowed Markakis to move to third, where he was stranded when Luke Scott struck out.
Bay Scores(7:51, MID 2, 1-0 Red Sox)
Jason Bay led off the inning with a walk. Mike Lowell followed with a single to center, that extended his hitting streak to 10 games. Jason Varitek walked to load the bases. Rocco Baldelli's fly ball to left wasn't deep enough to score Bay, but Nick Green followed with a fly ball to center that drove Bay in.
The inning ended when Ellsbury was called out on a close play at first.
Double Play (7:51, END 1, 0-0)
John Smoltz got the start tonight and is looking for his second win of the season. After Brian Roberts led off with a ground out to second, Nolan Reimold was hit by a pitch. But the inning quickly ended when Adam Jones hit an infield grounder that led to a double play.
Ortiz Gets Mixed Greeting (7:51, MID 1, 0-0)
With two outs and Jacoby Ellsbury on second base, David Ortiz stepped to the plate to a chorus of boos and applause, with some fans standing in support of the slugger. But Ortiz ended up striking out to end the inning.

Nick Green is killing this team. "Throwing errors 'r us." He's already cost the Sox two games because he can't control that gun of an arm. Lowrie should be in there every day.

The Smoltz experiment is OVAH! Go play golf you useless wast of space.
"Huff and Wigginton"
After their playing days are over, that's a law firm.
Smoltz wins, but it's just another weak start. DOn't care what he or Varitek says, there's just no reason to believe this will work out. Penny, on the other hand, has a pulse.
I sure hope the four losses by Smoltz while he's trying to "find" himself, don't come back to haunt us at the end of the season. He did NOT deserve last night's win.
How much longer can he say, "the process was good, but not the results".
Your ship has sailed, Smoltz, actually it's sinking!!
I would hold Lester from Wednesday's start in Tampa and let him lead off in New York having Beckett pitch after him on his regular schedule. With Monday's day off, that shouldn't be a problem. At least you're guranteed the first 2 wins. Then it's a crap shoot with Clay, Penny and Smoltz. At least you get a split against NY.
Although we should continue our dominance over NY, now that we are in their heads as their daddy. 8-0 this year against the Evil Empire!!!!! SWEET so far
Red Sox owed Smoltz a win in Bal'more after that 11-10 bull-pen melt down last time they were there
The Red Sox can't afford the Smoltz experiment any longer if they hope to make the playoffs this year. It's either move him to the bullpen or release him. Bring Bowden up until Wakefield is ready to come back. Of course, we don't know will be able to catch him.
The Sox can no longer continue the Smoltz rehab experiment. He is not a 5th starter, he more like a 10th. Either move him to the bullben or release him. Bring Bowden up until Wake is ready and then figure who will catch him.
Holy cow people calm down! He's our #5 starting pitcher! Look at the other teams in the playoff chases #5 starting pitcher...can you name Texas (Tommy Hunter)? Detroit (Rick Porcello)? Anaheim (Sean O'Sullivan)? Bartolo Colon is Chicago's...Sergio Mitre is New York's...Jeff Neimann is Tampa Bay's...
so...out of all of those pitchers (Smoltz, Hunter, Porcello, O'Sullivan, Colon, Mitre, or Neimann) who would you want as your #5 pitcher??? I for one would take Smoltz hands down...and it doesn't matter cause once Wakefield comes back from the DL Penny drops to #5 and Smoltz is long relief/ER starter...
also, I think Wakefield might come back in Tampa Bay just to push Lester and Beckett back to the Yankees series. Tito and Theo have a knack at doing such moves coincidentally when the Yankees are coming...
The beat goes on with Francona. Who are you going to let beat you? Rookie of the year and all star Evan Longoria or Joe Dilion, a RHH with 30 ab's? Clearly, with 2 outs and the winning run on 3rd base in the 13th inning "the enabler" should have walked Longoria and the switch hitting Zobrist to get to a pinch hitter or Dillion, a 34 year old career minor leaguer with 217 life time major league ab's, 3 hr's and .263 batting average......have no idea why the Red Sox quantitative analysis driven, Ivy educated, front office continually tolerate these type of decisions......can't imagine paying a manager a mid million piece to hold press conferences and be a "friend" to the players. The Sox front office is constantly on the lookout for market inequities. They need look no further than their manager, an underlay if ever there was one
