Posted by David Lefort, Boston.com Staff July 1, 2009 03:38 PM

The Red Sox today announced the signing of their first-round pick in this year’s draft, outfielder Reymond Fuentes of Fernando Callejo High School in Puerto Rico.

The 6-foot-1, 170-pound Fuentes was assigned the Rookie League Gulf Coast Red Sox in Fort Myers, Fla.

The Red Sox also announced the signing of four other picks -- outfielder Jeremy Hazelbaker (fourth round), outfielder Shannon Wilkerson (eighth round), catcher Michael Thomas (12th round), and first baseman Chris McGuiness (13th round) -- bringing their total number of picks signed to 16.

  1. Similarities to Mother's Day Miracle Game:

    Final Score: 6-5
    Location: Baltimore, day game
    Starting Sox Pitcher: Beckett
    9th inning deficit: 5-0 (2007) 5-1 (2009)
Julio Lugo sends across the go ahead run
The Baltimore starter is lights out all game, and is pulled in the 9th in favor of the bullpen, which quickly collapses.
    Danys Baez sucks.
Boston LF who is leading team in RBI goes hitless.

    Did I miss anything?

  1. Bay looks pretty sick at the plate. Sit him for a few days.

  1. I'm not worried about Bay. Everybody goes through slumps. It's just part of baseball.

Anyways, psyched about Fuentes. I'm praying he turns out as good as his uncle or cousin or whatever Beltran is.

  1. Fuentes was Theo and crew's pick from the start. They were obviously high on his makeup and plus speed. You add in a power upside, once he grows into his frame, and you've got a excellent signing for the Sox.

Good Job Theo! Doing a bang up job.

  1. When Bay goes through slumps, it is not uncommon that he strikes out a lot. This has been relevent in his past slumps. Maybe not in here in Boston, but I think he had a period last year in Pitts. that was something like this.
