Underway at Fenway

Posted by Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff July 6, 2009 07:19 PM

John Smoltz pitched out of a two-on, two-out jam in the first inning.

Smoltz allowed a leadoff single to third baseman Adam Kennedy, but Orlando Cabrera knocked into a double play. Matt Holliday then singled up the middle. The .197-hitting Jason Giambi came up to a round of boos and walked, but catcher Kurt Suzuki grounded it to third, where Kevin Youkilis touched the base for the force.

Here in the bottom of the first with the Sox up, the message board had a warm welcome for Nomar Garciaparra. The crowd cheered. Garciaparra is due up first in the second inning.
