Updates: Red Sox at Blue Jays

Posted by Adam Kilgore, Globe Staff July 18, 2009 03:52 PM

SOX LOSE (3:52, END 9, 6-2 JAYS)
Scott Downs closed it out in the ninth despite Lowell's lead off double, and the Red Sox dropped a game to the Blue Jays. Brad Penny gave up six runs in five innings, struggling with his command for much of his outing. Shortstop Jed Lowrie hit a home run in his first game since April 11, but the Sox managed six hits.

SOX DOWN TO THEIR LAST THREE (3:32, MID 8, 6-2 JAYS)
The Jays bullpen continued to mow down the Red Sox. Adam Lind led off the eighth with a bloop double that popped out of Mike Lowell's glove after Lowrie and him bumped into each other, a mistake possibly caused by a lack of communciation brought on by Lowrie's prolonged time away. UPDATE: The official scorer made a late ruling change and gave Lowrie a two-base error.

ACCARDO ENTERS (3:10, TOP 7, 6-2 JAYS)
After Hill and Rolen robbed Kottaras and Drew of singles, Cito Gaston came out and summoned Jeremy Accardo from the bullpen. With two outs and none on, he'll face Pedroia.

WELCOME BACK (3:07, TOP 7, 6-2 JAYS)
Lowrie made his first hit post-rehab count. On the first pitch Carlson threw, Lowrie crushed a hooking liner over the leftfield fence, just to the right of the foul pole. That's his first home run this season.

JAYS MASTERED (3:04, END 6, 6-1 JAYS)
Masterson made quick work. Rios popped to shallow right, Millar struck out looking at a 3-2 pitch outside and at the knees, and Bautista flied to right on the first pitch.

Lefthanded reliever Jesse Carlson has replaced Marc Rzepczynski, who allowed four hits and four walks in six innings.

DEEP SIXED (2:59, MID 6, 6-1 JAYS)
Bay led off with a walk, but Marc still escaped facing the minimum after Baldelli grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning. Justin Masterson has replaced Penny. This should be a good matchup inning for him, as he'll face Rios, Millar, and Bautista -- all righthanded batters.

PENNY THROUGH FIVE (2:49, END 5, 6-1 JAYS)
Penny got a fly out to center from Rolen and struck out Overbay to get out of the fifth. He's thrown about 82 pitches now. Bay will lead off the sixth.

PENNY ON THE ROPES (2:45, BOT 5, 6-1 JAYS)
Scutaro led off with a double, and after Hill grounded to short, Justin Masterson began warming up. While he threw in the bullpen, Adam Lind lashed an opposite field home run into the Blue Jays bullpen. It was the Jays' first homer in 59 innings, and it brought Penny's day closer to ending, despite the fact that he's thrown 74 pitches -- and rubber his hair seven times.

SOX CAN'T ANSWER (2:38, MID 5, 4-1 JAYS)
George Kottaras and Dustin Pedroia walked, but Youkilis struck out on a check swing and Ortiz, on a 3-2 count, broke his bat while weakly grounding out to first.

FEELING BLUE (2:23, BOT 4, 4-1 JAYS)
Penny struck out Millar, but Bautista delivered a big blow with two outs, lining a double to left-center. Both runners scored, and the Jays took a three-run lead.

TORONTO TAKES LEAD (2:17, BOT 4, 2-1 JAYS)
Rolen, Lyle Overbay, and Rios knocked three straight singles with one out, scoring the go-ahead run. Millar is batting with men on first and second.

QUICK ONE (2:11, MID 4, 1-1)
Ever since Marc escaped in the second, he's stifled the Sox. Lowell grounded to short, Baldelli flied to right, and Lowrie crunched a high, deep fly ball to left-center that Rios settled under easily.

NOTHING DOING (2:05, END 3, 1-1)
Kevin Youkilis doubled with one out in the Sox half of the inning, but he moved no further than third base. Penny retired the Jays in order, but only after taking a line drive off his body. Raul Chavez ripped a ball back at him, and it hit him in the glove, stomach, or leg; couldn't really tell. Unfazed, he picked up the ball and tossed to first for the out. Remember that ball that hit Penny square in the chest? Guy's indestructible. Scutaro struck out looking at an inside fastball, and Hill crushed a line drive right at Pedroia.

We're up to six BPHRs.

JAYS ANSWER (1:49, END 2, 1-1)
Penny loaded the bases and lost his command for a moment in the second, but he escaped by allowing just a run thanks largely to a 6-4-3 double play by Kevin Millar. Penny allowed two singles and then a walk to Alex Rios, against whom he left his fastball way up. He settled to induce the double play from Millar, and then Jose Bautista popped to right.

The Brad Penny Hair Rub count is up to five.

SOX ON THE BOARD (1:38, TOP 2, 1-0 SOX)
The Sox were pounding Marc, having scored one run with a threat to score more. Jason Bay led off the inning with a double to the left-center gap. Mike Lowell walked, and Rocco Baldelli ripped a hit to right-center. Bay sped around to score, and Lowell proved he's feeling good by trying to go first-to-third. He should have been thrown out, but Scott Rolen dropped the relay throw. Baldelli moved up to second, but Jed Lowrie struck out looking in his first Red Sox at-bat snce April 11. George Kottaras popped foul to third. The two runners in scoring position fell to Drew, who grounded out to second. Considering they had men on second and third with no outs, the Sox really let an opportunity to give Penny some leeway go.

PENNY ROLLS (1:25, END 1, 0-0)
Marco Scutaro and Aaron Hill each hit line drives off of Penny, but each was caught and Penny had a 1-2-3 inning after Adam Lind grounded to Youkilis.

As a parlor game today, we're going count and keep a running tally of how many times Penny takes off his cap and rubs his hair. After one inning, there have been two Brad Penny Hair Rubs.

SINGULAR EFFORT (1:19, MID 1, 0-0)
Dustin Pedroia ripped a single into leftfield, but the Sox couldn't get anything going in the first. J.D. Drew, after showing bunt on the first pitch, struck out. Kevin Youkilis and David Ortiz each grounded out to the right side against Marc Rzepczynski, who for the rest of the day we'll be calling Marc

  1. "Penny rolls"
Confession time. How long have you been waiting to use that?

  1. On the general subject of Penny's name, BTW, there's an odd thing about it: Both his first and last names describe sizes of small nails. Was there ever a major league player whose first and last names described the same thing?

  1. "Marc Rzepczynski, who for the rest of the day we'll be calling Marc"

Last note on the subject of names: If you can get Marc Rzepczynski to say his, backwards, he returns to the 5th Dimension.

  1. Why did Tito say he was putting in Lowrie on his first day back?Nick didn't need a day off what a waste,I'm sorry but they knew tomorrow that Halladay was pitching and they could have used Lowrie then, but the nitwit true to his form decided to mess with the chemistry...I don't care what anyone says Tito is an idiot....

  1. Penny was bad today but I wonder how much of that was because he was throwing to Kottaras instead of Tek who I'm sure he got used to throwing to.
It was one bad outing though. Don't think it's time to demand a trade because of one appearance.

  1. Does anyone else think the Red Sox need a better batting coach? i mean, lately, rookie pitchers have looked like Cy Young against the Sox lineup. Couldn't a good hitting coach help some of the Sox bats gain, or, regain their stride? It sure looks pitiful at the plate sometimes, like the Sox batter has no clue....

  1. Once again, some of you were duped that Penny was good. He hasn't gone past 5 innings yet. He's fat, over-rated and will get lit up against the Yankees and in the playoffs. Just like Dice K's exaggerated "good" season last year some people just think because a pitcher gets a W means they're good. Sometimes like Pap in the all star game you get lucky. Penny stinks. Let's get Buckholtz in the rotation and get a big bat, because Lowell and Drew are just dead weight right now. Sox bats better get going or the Yankees will blow by us.

  1. Penny should be gone now but I hope we get decent return on him. Let's hope Smoltz holds up or the pitching riches will be stretched.

  1. The Toronto announcers were pronouncing his name "Zip-Chin-Ski". He had a slightly better outing that Buchholz had yesterday. Buchholz couldn't finish the 6th inning.

  1. What the heck was Francona thinking!? George Kottaras catching Brad Penny? Managing by his book again and not by a sense of the moment. I know, it's a day game after a night game. Too bad for Tek. He just had 4 consecutive days off during the All- Star break. Tek handles Penny better. Tek has a bat that would have given the Sox a better chance to score. No, you can't win every game. But if Francona would look up from his list of formulas and focus on the flow of the moment the Sox might be able to put some distance between themselves and the Yankees over the next few weeks.

  1. Penny signed his trade ticket out of Boston with good starts weeks ago. The Sox have known all along that he can't sustain them. All he did today was decrease his trade value. Theo has proven he can build a solid franchise. What he hasn't proven is his ability to create a dynasty. Dynasties win multiple championships and consecutive championships. Buchholz will never become a consistant starter in Boston or in any other major market. There's too much pressure. He could develop well in Toronto where the expectations are lower. Theo needs to put together a package that includes Buchholz and Penny for Halladay.

  1. I only listened up to the fourth... but that inning reminded me of the 11-10 collapse in Baltimore. Penny had two strikes on most of those guys and gave up singles, which if I remember was the pattern in the Baltimore game. Is Kottaras just a very aggressive catcher? I imagine the pitchers think they can strike anybody out and need to be forced to throw three or four straight balls.

  1. Can anyone at the globe clue us in to how bad the red sox hitting percentage with men on base is this month, particularly in the early innings when they have a chance to blow the game open. Regardless of the talk of all the great pitching, the Sox will not win this year (or make the playoffs) without adding a major hitter or two to the lineup.
