Wake and Beckett may not play

Posted by Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff July 14, 2009 10:58 PM

ST. LOUIS - Tim Wakefield was only supposed to pitch if the game headed into extra innings and Josh Beckett was only to be used in an absolute emergency. With the AL leading 4-3 heading into the 9th, it would take an NL 9th-inning rally to get the knuckleballer in the game.

Kevin Youkilis got his first chance in the eighth inning and singled to center. Jason Bay went 1-for-2 with a first-inning single. Jonathan Papelbon had that eventful 7th inning where Brad Hawpe was robbed of a homer on a great catch by Carl Crawford.

Ryan Howard stranded runners in scoring position in the 8th when he struck out against Twins closer Joe Nathan.

  1. Insights? More like useless. Why don't you explain your claims about Wakefield's and Beckett's availability? You leave the reader completely in the dark.

  1. Bay/Youkilis go 2 for 3
Papelbon gets the win and pitches a perfect inning of relief.
Bay is the only starter no get 3 AB's, Youkilis finished second by an inch in All Star voting and gets only 1 AB and dosent get to play the field, yet Crawford who is the backup LF gets 3 AB's. Maddon is just playing his guys thats BS.
