Will John Henry eat Julio Lugo's contract?

Posted by Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff July 16, 2009 09:51 PM

Sometime this weekend in Toronto, Jed Lowrie is scheduled to return to the Red Sox' active roster and Julio Lugo could be gone. The Sox have been trying to move Lugo for some time and short of some phantom injury which would buy them more time, it may get to the point where Sox owner John Henry will have to eat the remaining $13 million or so of Lugo's contract.

Will he do it?

"We will do what is in the best interests of the club...in all matters," Henry wrote in an E-mail today.

Lugo is in the third season of a 4-year, $32 million deal. He's never taken to a utility role as witnessed by his half-season stint in Los Angeles. With Nick Green playing well and Lowrie ready, there doesn't appear to be a spot for Lugo. The Sox could give him his outright release, designate him for assignment or deal him.

  1. Eat the contract, John. Do us all a favor. It IS in the best interest of the club and the fans. Thank you!

  1. If John Henry wants to do "what is in the best interests of the club...in all matters," then he should sign Jason Bay to a fair (JD Drew) contract. Because if Bay becomes a free agent he WILL become a Yankee. Bay and Holliday will replace the departing Damon and Matsui -- a couple of million more dollars for a ton more production. And the Sox will end up overpaying for a lesser bat or trading valuable young arms to find more offense. It just doesn't add up.

  1. Phantom injury not needed. Julio Lugo has lost speed since his surgery, and hasn't had sufficient time to get his rehab fully done. He is hurting. As speed is one of his core skills, to get his value up he needs to get his speed back.

IMO, Julio should be DL'd, sent to Florida with Daisuke, get fully rehabbed and return through the MiLB system to Fenway on 9/1. If his speed returns and he continues to hit for average, he will provide infield depth and be used as a pinch hitter and pinch runner. He could help the team in this way, while increasing his trade value. He could even rebound. As the Sox are paying him anyway, why not try to get something in return, especially as in these roles he would be good.

  1. Read between the lines, baby.
And thanks, Julio. Sorry it didn't work out. But I certainly appreciate your contributions to the '07 championships, and I appreciate the fact that you were a professional about being displaced.

  1. For as good as Theo Epstein has done with the farm system, et al., his contract negotiations/signings have left alot to be desired. Lugo may very well be untradeable, and Theo's contract to him makes it even more so. JD Drew overpaid. Lugo overpaid. The Reteria disaster. Essentially spending 20 million to get rid of Manny. Theo in this regard is spotty at best. The people he should not nickle and dime ( Texeira and Bay) are the very ones he draws a line in the sand on.

  1. He'll eat the contract if he's hungry enough...

  1. What prevents the Sox from sending him to Tripple A as a back up in case Green or Lowrie get hurt?

His hitting has been ok at 290 or so. I'd offer him his release if he's willing to forego a portion of his contract. If he isn't, then bury him on the DL or minors till we can find a trade or till we need a pinch hitter. Its not like he can pout and claim we're holding him back. Apparently, no team is willing to give us a marginal prospect.

  1. What do you mean, "will JH eat lugo's contract"? He's already eaten the contract. How does it matter if Lugo is sitting on the bench with the Red Sox, Playing for some other team, or sitting at home? It's a wasted $13 million. The best that they can hope for is literally a bag of balls for Lugo.

  1. No, I support Julio Lugo. He needs the confidence & playing time to get back to his capabilities. Fans should not jump to fast judgements & look for quick fix, immediate satisfaction. Lugo's a Pro, he's proven himself before, & he deserves to show he can do it again.

  1. If they deal him then it's highly likely that they'll have to take on a big chunk of his contract. Then again, one way or another they're going to have to fork over the loot. My adopted team, the Tigers, seem to be the masters of that, going back to when they dumped Damien Easley (a wise move). They're still paying off Sheffield and Dontrelle Willis (who, sadly, seems to be washed up) to the tune of about $24M this season. The Sox have deep pockets, which means that they should do what it takes to win.

  1. They should do whatever costs least+helps team...simple as that. Why can't they package him with one of thier top prospects for something they need for the stretch run? Maybe losing the 13 mil is better than swaping a prospect for a bench player?

  1. what we need to do is trade both lugo and lowrie to the pirates and get jack wilson. This would end the revolving door at SS. If the Bucs dont want lugo than release him and move on. Nick Green is more than capable of backing up at SS.

  1. Signing Lugo and Drew in the same off season to long term, expensive contracts will probably be Theo's biggest mistakes. No one bats 1.000

  1. all and all a terrible signing. this is no surprise to most of us.

  1. They should keep Nick Green, regardless of what they do with the other players involved in this debacle.

  1. Please, end the misery for The Nation .. just release him already! Is it just me, or did Julio ever look like he "fit" with the Sox??? Aside from his continual, sub-par performance, he just always seemed on the outside loking in. Really tough to warm up to on any level. Best of luck where ever you go, Julio. Take the $$ and run.

  1. Don't care what it takes as long as Lugo the wife beater is off the Sox roster......never liked him or his game.......GOOD RIDDANCE

  1. never should have made that deal in the first place. I said it then and I say it now. They could also have done as well for someone different in right field for less money.

  1. I'd just like to be the guy who reminds everyone that we'll be paying Lugo $13million for the next year and a half....meanwhile that's what it would have cost to get Mark Teixeira. Way to go John Henry..... you let the Yanks pick up a powerful bat because you wanted to hang onto Lugo (ok, i know that wasn't the thinking, but the numbers worked out nicely).

  1. somebody also said that by signing Lugo we lost our draft position, and could have picked up Rick Porcello who the Sox were really high on
