Globe 10.0: Dividing 5 into 4
On today's episode of Globe 10.0, Bob Ryan and Dan Shaughnessy suggest we're about to see how good Red Sox manager Terry Francona is with fractions because he's going to have to divide five players into four available lineup spots (1B, 3B, DH, C).
With the addition of Victor Martinez at the trading deadline, the Red Sox are now faced with the challenge of sharing playing time between Martinez, Jason Varitek, Kevin Youkilis, David Ortiz, and Mike Lowell.
Martinez (C, 1B) and Youkilis (1B, 3B) offer versatility that should ensure their bats are in the lineup each day, but Shaughnessy suggests that Lowell and Varitek may no longer be everyday players and Lowell in particular might find himself on the bench more than he likes due to his diminished defense at age 35.
Shaughnessy notes this may be Francona's biggest challenge as skipper since keeping Manny Ramirez happy.
