Reddick out, Traber in

Posted by Tony Massarotti, Globe Staff August 5, 2009 03:49 PM

The Red Sox have not yet made a formal announcement, but Josh Reddick is on his way back to the minor leagues with lefthander Billy Traber poised to take his spot on the 25-man roster for tonight's game with Tampa Bay. The Red Sox have an obvious need for a fresh arm in the wake of last night's 13-inning loss, during which manager Terry Francona emptied out his bullpen. All six Boston relievers appeared in the game and Clay Buchholz was due to enter in the 14th had the game gone that far.

Traber is 7-5 with a 3.32 ERA in 32 games (four starts) at Triple A Pawtucket this year.

  1. Traber was terrible in Spring Training. He has been ok, not great at Pawtucket.

  1. As a Yanks fan I can tell you that bring up Traber is a great move, for the Yanks

  1. Traber has pitched better as the season progressed, but was terrible even in the start of the season in Pawtucket. He has started his last 3 appearances (5, 5 1/3 and 6 innings) so he is stretched out to go more than 1 innings.
Not sure he is the solution for the remainder of the year, but he can help his cause with a couple of good multi-inning outings.

  1. Leave Penny out there until his arm falls off and let him earn his bloated salary.
Reddick was a nice addition. Too bad he gets squeezed out here. If the Sox win this one tonight it will be a minor miracle!

  1. Why not Bowden? I don't think this makes any sense.

  1. The Red Sox are in second place behind the Yankees. The Sox also have beaten the Yankees 8 times with no losses. The season has a way of balancing out,I would be shocked (and happy)should we maintain the dominance of the Yanks.
Sad to say I don't believe that will happen. My sad prediction:no playoffs this year.
    I hope I am wrong.

  1. God forbid a reliever has to work two days in a row after an offday Monday. What a bunch of P-words. Reddick deserved to stay. They should have DL'd Big Papi (for anxiety) instead.

  1. We need hitters and this idoit Francoma sends them to the minors??? He claims what he does is best for the team but his actions tell me otherwise.

  1. The best way to win baseball games is to option the one outfield bat that has been producing to aaa for a 30yo lefty reliever wit a career ERA of 6 who couldn't even stick with the Nats. Go Red Sux!

  1. Hey JoeyDiro: Maybe when you call someone an idiot, you should make sure you at least spell it correctly. Otherwise, it's not saying too much about your own intelligence.

  1. This is obviously a short term move because of last night's game. I don't think Tito is making a statement that we need pitching more then hitting. It's a situational move so everyone calm down.

Either way Reddick was destined to go back to the minors because he needs to play every day and he won't do that while Drew, Bay and Ellsbury are healthy

  1. You guys are morons. This guy will be up for 1-2 games max, only to be used if the Sox need long relief. Where's the brains in the Nation?.

  1. Reddick "produced" for two games. Last night against the first legit major league pitcher he's faced he looked like what he is, a 22 year old AA hitter. He'll be back but he's nowhere near ready to help the team on a daily basis

  1. what happened to the manager comming out late in the game and asking the STARTING PITCHER how he feels and if he felt ok leave him in!!!!!!! this pitch count crap is revolting lester was the best pitcher on the field last nite let him roll if he's ok he deserved the right to win or lose last nite on his own

  1. I recall a pitcher that Theo picked up a few years ago who had been released from the worst team in baseball. That was after all those injuries.

    He did very well.

  1. The Red Sox have an obvious need for a fresh arm ,,,

The Red Sox have an obvious need for a productive bat - which the kid Reddick has supplied so far. Why send him down?
