Remy returning Friday
Popular color commentator Jerry Remy is returning to the broadcast booth Friday, just in time for the Red Sox series opener against the rival Yankees.
He will ease in to his return, coming back on a part-time basis alongside play-by-play voice Don Orsillo.
"I want to thank NESN, the Red Sox and all of Red Sox Nation for their incredible level of support," Remy said "I’m really looking forward to getting back to work and doing the job that I miss terribly."
Remy took a leave of absence May 6 to recuperate from the effects of lung cancer surgery last fall. During a visit to Fenway Park last week -- his first return to the ballpark to see a game since taking leave -- he spoke openly about battling depression during his recovery.
Remy spoke about returning to work with pregame host Tom Caron Wednesday night.
"Now I'm glad I did it [return to Fenway last week] because it really kind of gets that out of the way and when I do come back on Friday to do a game, it's just a normal day," Remy said. "The Yankees being in town, obviously that's a little bit different, but to get all this personal stuff out of the way I think was a great thing for me last week. But it is a little bit uncomfortable. You know I'm not a player, I'm just a broadcaster. To have that much attention put on you it means people care about you.
"I'm anxious right now just thinking about it. But I'm sure once you get back into the swing of things after an inning or so it will be just like old times, and we'll have hopefully a good game and a little bit of fun."
Remy began broadcasting Red Sox games for NESN in 1988 and has become an institution in New England. His ability to connect with fans is legendary, and many view him as one of the family.
"We are thrilled that Jerry is ready to get back in the booth this week," said NESN president Sean McGrail. "He is an important part of the NESN family, and we are all very happy that he will be back in his familiar spot."

Best news all day!
WELCOME BACK REMDAWG
I am glad Remy is feeling better and healthy but I am a huge Eck fan. I hope he continues to do more than he was doing before he replaced Remy when he was on the pre-game and post-game shows. Eck is much more entertaining and tells it like it is. As much as I like Remy it started to be about him with all of his Remdog stuff and things like that. Atleast make it a 3 man booth. I hope NESN realizes what they have in Eck and get him out of TBS and on NESN most of the time!
Thank God
That's great news. Welcome back, Jerry!
Welcome back Remy! We missed you!
Awesome! Welcome back Mr Dawg!
Welcome Back Jerry!
Remy, God bless you for giving it your all. We miss you and love you.
I kind of had a feeling it was going to be for the Yankees series. I think it's perfect. He works Friday and then there are two National TV games so he eases himself back in. Glad to have you back, Remy! We missed you.
Awesome! 3 men would work-Don, Eck, Remy, I think would be epic. Although I don't think Remdog or Eck care too much for traveling at this point. At any rate, welcome back Remdog.
Great to hear.
YAY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Welcome back Rem Dog!
Best wishes to Remdawg. He's a class act.
However, may I say that without criticism of Jerry, I thoroughly loved Dennis Eckersley's commentary and learned so much from his analysis of the art and science of playing the game. I felt like I was inside Francona's and Varitek's heads as they dissected the opponents' approach to the game.
Besides that part, Eck has such a warm sense of humor and brought insights from his own experience on the mound. We would have missed so much without him!
So excited for Rem Dog's return!!!!!! I had to mute the TV while watching games lately because I found Eckersley to be an aweful commentator! I mean how do you mess up Masterson THAT badly?!? He might be better with some training, but for now I say stay on the after game show, live commentating just isn't his thing!
I'm with M Bayer! Congrats, Mr Remy, and NESN, please don't get rid of ECK - he has been a BLAST - and I too have learned SO much.
Welcome back Jerry ---- but I to must admit I would really miss Eck so let's have all three
i hope he doesn't come back....great i get to hear about his $10 score card what else are you going to try and sell me ?
Get Remy back and keep Eck for road games, and if not, then at least get rid of that god-awful Frank Viola. His laugh is so bad I had to mute the TV every game he has covered. Terrible.
YES! Just in time to save us from anymore Frank Viola . . . .
WELCOME BACK REM DOG,you have been missed,so glad your better.
Menino should declare a holiday. Who in New England won't tune in for this? It'll be a communal thing.
You suck Kevin
We are members of the Nation, here on the west coast of Florida (priginally from CT, watching on the "package"--thank you John Kerry!). We watched Jerry's appearance in the booth last week and I was glad to see him looking so robust. I thank him, and the Red Sox management for having him talk about the depression surrounding his illnesses. I am sure that he saved more than one life by helping to de-stigmatize the issue. Men in particular need to know that they are not alone. Very brave; very brave.
The RemDawg is in the house. Good to hear!!!
I think they all have their strengths: I love Remdawg, I wish I looked like Eck and Viola knows baseball. I hope they work them all in. What carries the day is knowledge and they all have it. Welcome back Dawg!
Thank God, I have been watching the games on mute since whoever that retarded sounding smug asshole is sitting in his chair is unbearable to listen to. I'd rather have Bill Walton on there than this one dude. Awful. Welcome back RemDawg, you have truly been missed!!!

REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMYYYYYYYYYYY
Kevin, why would someone say that? You are a sick person. Welcome back Jerry and good health to you.
Woo hoo! The best news I have heard all week. Bummed I will be at a remote camp in Maine and won't be able to see his return, but will be sending good vibes for a great broadcast. Great to have you back, Remy
NICE
That's good news! I miss the Don and Jerry show. When they get laughing and can't talk for a minute or so, flippin cracks me up! Welcome Back Jerry!
I can't wait to hear him say Buenes Noches Amigos!...We've missed you Jerry!! Good health to you! Seems the fill-in commentators have egos (except Dave Roberts) bigger than the Green Monstah. Listening has been painful, especially last few games.
Welcome back Jerry. We have missed you a lot. I am very happy that you are feeling well enough to return to the broadcast booth. The mayor should declare Friday Jerry Remy Day.
Welcome back RemDawg!! Red Sox Nation has missed you!!
Yes, yes, yes!!!! All of New England is saying "yes!!!!!!" tonight. It's going to be TGIF in more ways than one this week! Welcome back, Jerry.
Today is the best day of the summer!!!!!! I can't wait till Friday!!!! WELCOME BACK ! tell them that Eck has to fill in and or do the 3 man booth!!!!!!!!!!!!! We have truely missed you this season!!!!!!
Great news on Remy's return!
And -- here's one NESN viewer hoping Eck will return to the studio full-time.
It will be great to have you back with Don!!!
Best wishes for a continued successful recovery.
KIDS - DON'T SMOKE !!!!
I'm with you Kim-I love when Jerry says Buenos Noches (or Tardes) Amigos! It hasn't been the same without Remdawg. It's been a long season. Whoever was calling the game last night was soooo bad!
God bless you and welcome back!
Thats GREAT !!!
Welcome back, Rem, and good riddance to the Cheese Man. What is meant by part-time?
Thanks for the alert, but I'll dust off my radio for his return to the booth. Eck was a better analyst.
I'm happy he's healthy to be back, I just don't care for his self-promotion ways.
Welcome back Jerrry and God bless you. Now I really hope we haven't heard the last of Eck. What a refreshing delight.
It'll be great to have the Rem Dawg back calling games & providing some inspiration to others out there battling cancer. Eck did a phenomenal job filling in, what a funny ba$tard he is.
Kevin, stop being such a jacka$$. You're taking pot shots at a guy that just battled cancer and depression, just because he's trying to earn a few dollars. C'mon, you're better than that.
I prefer Eck.....Remy got old a long time ago. I would bet that under sodium pentathol that Orsillo would say he prefers Eck as well.
Welcome home, RemDawg ! Keep up the good fight !
Hooray -
Now the game will be explained in English not Eckerlese......glad you're back......no more painitng, cheese, moss, etc.........just real explanations using real words......Eck - try listening to Vin Scully, etc. and learn something....the cute comments were obsolete after the first ten times...nice job predicting the upcoming pitches too - you and Ortiz - both "0 for August"........see I can speak like you too............. :-)
I just found out about this (Jerry coming back) a few moments ago and WOW, what a great BIRTHDAY PRESENT this is for me today!!!!! What a great week so far - Red Sox winning games again, the birth of Pede's first son yesterday and now this! I cannot wait til Friday! I miss Remdawg terribly, but I have also grown fond of ECK and I too hope he'll stick around.
Great news on my special day. I'm psyched! :)
You people need help. As far as I'm concerned Remy can stay away forever. Anyone who remotely understands the game of baseball prefers Eck to Remy, who dumbs down the game between selling scorecards and T-shirts. Looks like I'll be watching the games on mute again.
I'm glad Remy is getting better and is finding his way out of the horror of depression. I'm looking forward to hearing his analysis once again. But I've got to say that I was getting really, really tired of listening to sales pitches for everything from score cards to used tissues. And I haven't missed that stupid Wally doll a single bit.
Yeah, Eck's foot goes in his mouth once in a while, but he's got passion and perception. I'm going to miss him. I hope he gets first call when there's a need.
Finally let's give Don Orsillo a big pat on the back for making a good supportive environment for all the guest commentators. He found a way to get the best out of all of them.
I am really surprised at some of these comments. If you prefer Eck, can't you keep that to yourself? How do you think he will feel reading these comments? And some of the nasty comments, I just don't understand it. How would you feel if you read these? Hasn't he been through enough? Give the guy a break.
Kevin is not sick. Although I like Remy, i can see why some people woudld not care for him. Why is is that if you don't fall head over heels for someone and gush all over them you are sick? Gimme a break the guy is good and I am glad he beat cancer but he used to smoke 3 packs a day he is not a war hero. Even he would agree with that.
"How do you think he would feel if he read these?"
Are you kidding me with that comment? This guy is a public figure in Boston, I AM pretty sure he can handle not being everyone's favorite. Some of the people on these message boards are amazing. The guy has the best job in the world, makes a ton of money, has a lot of friends and family, and you are worried about people hurting his feelings because someone says they like Eck more than him?
Truly amazing.
kevin, you stll suck, not matter what name you post under.
What great news. Hasn't been the same without Remdawg.
"get rid of that god-awful Frank Viola. His laugh is so bad I had to mute the TV every game he has covered. Terrible."
Exactly! I had to turn it down too. What in the world is that guy giggling like a school girl about? He just giggles on and on- for no reason. Like a lunatic. I turned it down and put Joe C. on, even though it was out of sink. I just couldn't take that horrible, horrible giggle.
Welcome back Jerry! I'm very happy you are feeling well enough to return to the booth. I am not ashamed to say, however, that I have thoroughly enjoyed Eck. I did not care for any of Don's other 26 partners this season!
We are thrilled for you, Jerry.
Thank the good lord we're blessed to have Jerry Remy back.
Listening to Dave Roberts for some reason makes me feel like I'm listening to a Montreal Expos weekday afternoon game.
Great news that Remy is well and on the way back physically. Unfortunate that he's returning to the booth. He should spend more time with his family and try to get his children back in line. Seems to have missed a few steps when they were younger. He'll also have time to market his various businesses--albeit without the free advertising afforded by his NESN perch.
Eck brings a sense of detached joy to the booth -- and has been a pleasure to listen to. It's time for a changing of the guard.

I agree that Eck has added a lot to the broadcasts. He is so knowledgeable about pitching and explains it in such an accessible way. That said, I am very glad that Jerry is back. He is a special guy and brings a special aura to the booth. Maybe they can have Eck there for a 3-man booth, at least at home games, since Eck doesn't travel with the team. He definitely needs to be used more by NESN.
Like the story said Remy is like part of the family. But Eks honesty was refreshing and insightful
Crap. It was good while it lasted, now it's back to Remy pitching Sham-wow or whatever he's selling these days. I wish him health (physical and mental) but it's offensive that Red Sox fans have to put up with this B.S. He must've made Henry put it into his last contract that he gets advertising opportunities that real sponsors pay millions for.
President of Red Sox Nation? What a stupid pink hat idea. Baseball, people!
I'm thrilled that Jerry is well, always admired him as a player and color man. However, I've always admired Eck as a player and color man too. I know it's Remy's job, but it's tough to lose hall of famer eckersly. I thought "Disco Denny" also brought out the best in Orsillo.
I really like chocolate pecan pie.
GREAT news. Jerry Remy is not full of himself ( nor were Dave Roberts and Sean Casey) like some of his replacements, who added great insight, but also a bit self-aggrandizing; the opposite of RemDawg, who is quite modest but was an excellent player himself.
Welcome back, Jerry. I for one am glad to see Eck go...can't stand to listen to the guy!
No one but Varitek can catch and no one but Remy can announce......laughable...
Even though I thought Eckersley did a pretty good job I really missed the Remdawg! He has such great chemistry with Orsillo and he has an uncanny ability to predict what will happen in a game pitch by pitch.
See you at the ol' ballpark on Friday! Welcome back.
Couldn't be happier !! Welcome back !! I'll be there Friday night too !
I'm sorry but Jerry Remy is to Red Sox nation what Suzyn Walman is to Yankees Universe.
Both total disgraces. I am going to miss Eck.
Keep Eck. Have RemDawg do commercials for his businesses and assorted other advertisers.
I agree that I will miss Eckersley doing the games. He's provided insight into these games that we haven't heard around here before. However, NESN's first duty is to the average fan and not hardcore baseball fans. The "pink hats" love Remy and he sells the team and NESN better than anyone and that's why NESN puts up with his over-the-top shameless self promotions. Remy gives NESN and the Red Sox exactly what they want. Eckersley gives hardcore baseball fans what they want. The choice for NESN and the Sox is pretty easy. I hope Remy is feeling better and wich him the best.
It's so good to have RemDawg back. Couldn't have happened at a better time. Hopefully he can bring some of his good fortune to the hometown team as they face off against NYY. We missed Jerry! Welcome back and be sure to listen to that inner voice! While I have loved Eck forever, it is Jerry that is the "new voice" of the Red Sox. As no one can replace Castiglione, no one can replace Remy. The shoes are too big to fill.
I really wish NESN held onto Lou Merloni :[
Can't wait! I look forward to laughing out loud again with you Remdawg. No matter what I do tomorrow, my butt will be in that chair at 7:00 PM. All I can say is life is good.......again!
FINALLY! Welcome back Remdawg
I can't wait until the point of the game Friday where Don and Jerry crack each other up to the point where no one says anything for a while. You can't help but laugh along with them.
At last! Welcome back Jerry!
...and whatever happens, get Viola out of the booth, he's terrible! Probably the worst sportscaster in the history of sport. Just awful.
