NEW YORK - The Red Sox have been searching to find a major league shortstop for quite some time and that search intensified this weekend after Jed Lowrie reinjured his left forearm and went on the disabled list.

Major League sources indicated early Sunday that the Red Sox had put in a claim on Washington Nationals switch-hitting shortstop Christian Guzman, who is hitting .315 after hitting .316 last season. But a Red Sox source indicated last night that after much deliberation they elected not to place the claim.

If Guzman goes unclaimed and clears trade waivers, the Sox and Nationals could still work out a deal. Guzman is a free-swinging hitter (he has only 13 walks and a .333 on base percentage) who has made two All-Star teams. He's hit mostly leadoff and second for the Nationals. Defensively he's also committed 13 errors.

During this trade waiver period teams can put in claims on players as they pass through waivers. The team awarded the claim on any player would have to have the worst record of any team who placed the claim. In Guzman's case, he would have to be passed on by every team in the National League first before an American League team would have a chance.

Guzman is currently in a two-year $16 million deal. He will earn $8 million next season, which would likely prevent a lot of teams risk placing a claim on him for fear the Nationals would just award him to get rid of the contract.

  1. Buckholz pitched a decent game and hopefully can contribute down-the-stretch for the wildcard spot. Forget 1st place, the Yanks are a far superior team in every aspect of the game. Theo should be run out-of-town for the disaster of a team he has assembled. Lowrie (DL thank goodness) and Green are AAA talent and once again Theo has failed miserably in acquiring a ML shorstop. Paul Byrd is another Theo high risk-low reward acquisition and now he's supposedly claimed Christian Guzman from the Nats. At least on paper Guzman will be an upgrade over Lowrie and Green.

  1. Sounds like a pretty decent move. I was impressed with him when they played the NATS this season. Better option than Nick Green everyday or Chis Woodward...hopefully.

  1. Great. More junk at SS. .... Theo should be fired!!! Best thing that has happened to this team in years was Beckett deal while Theo was out following Pearl Jam.

  1. I know live in the DC area and Guzman has been a relatively good player for the Nats. He's got a lively bat, but little plate discipline. And defensively, he can make great plays and then boot a slightly difficult one. It won't be a bad pickup at all. But he's probably not a solution for next year.

But then again, neither is Lowrie. Not much range for a shortstop.

They never should have traded Hanley Ramirez.

  1. Great solution for the rest of the year and next year. Not alot of power but he can hit and play a respectable defense. Get it done Theo

  1. wouldnt mind having him..he hits for average, has good range in the field, and has some speed

  1. This would be a nice pick up, at least we'd have a true MLB quality SS ... Lets hope this happens without having to give away too much ... but now we're coming to the negotiation table in a seriously weakened position of being desperate ... if Washington had any sense (which they may not given their record), they'd try to get as much out of us as they can.

That leaves us with just needing to pick up another solid arm since there is no way they'll upgrade the DH until after the season (probably just platoon Mike with him when we have a lefty pitching).

All this just highlights the ineptness of the FO, they only react and try to make a deal when RSN starts to mutiny. Our glaring weaknesses have been there for all to see for the last 2 months and they only made one deal before 7/31 ... basically putting a bandaid on a near fatal wound.

  1. Wow, they would have to pay Guzman and Lugo's salary in 2010. That is $16 million plus for a SS plus Lowrie's cheap salary. Lugo has a higher slugger and on base percentage than Guzman. I do not know why they did not go after Orlando Cabrera whom the Twins got for a lower level prospect.

This would be yet another Theo shortstop blunder. Where are you Manny Alexander? Too bad Alex Cora was let go. Not the best hitting SS, but he would give us a cheap steady SS. Much better than Green and Woodward.

  1. Cristian Guzman ... a good fit Sox fans ???

  1. How about Bucholtz, Bay, and Lowry for Hanley Ramirez? The Marlins have expressed past interest in Bucholtz and Ramirez deserves to be in the spotlight of the AL East - his path to the Hall Of Fame. If we don't get him - the Yankees will. The Yanks know they have 1 or 2 years left with their captain at SS.

The Nat's Guzman is 31 yrs old.......and it's time to stop the revolving door strategy to solving our SS needs. It's time for Theo to rebuild the Sox - and not for this year of for just next year. We don't need anymore 30 somethings......and Guzman is no better than Lugo.

  1. Hey, why not?

Posted by Nick August 9, 09 12:24 PM
  1. This kid might like Fenway. Lots of hits, good speed. Defense is a bit shaky, but if he can handle playing under the microscope, this could be a good pick-up.

Posted by baseballdiamond August 9, 09 12:26 PM
  1. 13 errors... what's his rep? If Scutaro is the 'gold standard (fielding & on base %)', where is Guzman? Does he have a lot of range and makes errors on balls few others would reach? Is he aggressive and makes errors when he should hold rather than throw the ball?
13 walks? How does batting 8th or 9th sound to you? $8 mil on a SS? Where have I heard that one before! At least it's only for another year. He can wear #13.

    Posted by joe1234 August 9, 09 12:29 PM
  1. This might end up making Green the odd man out. Guzman in for his offense and Woodward, the better defensive player between all three of them, in as a defensive replacement and the occasional off day.
    Hmm.

The Nat's Guzman is 31 yrs old.......and he's becoming their backup. Gonzalez is better in the field and he's beginning to hit for them. Can we finally learn that the revolving door strategy at SS is way too short sighted and it doesn't work. It's past time for Theo to rebuild the Sox - and not for this year of for just next year. 1. This is why Baseball has become such a joke. A big market team like Boston or New York can and will buy whatever they need. I have heard people complain about the Yankees buying their team, while the Red Sox are just as bad. I hope Tampa or Texas catch them and make the playoffs. For those who claim it is bad for baseball when small market teams make the playoffs because they say it "hurts baseball" I say look at the 25 other teams whose fans know they have know chance all season and think about what is really bad for baseball. This is why I can not wait for the NFL to start again.

Posted by Bill Terry August 9, 09 01:14 PM
  1. Lowrie hasn't proven anything on the field. He's still the equivalent of a minor prospect. Bay is a free agent after this year. The Sox can't trade him to anyone and expect any return unless they sign him to a multi-year deal. Buchholz has a lot of promise but might not be a star for another year or two.

Hanley Ramirez is the second best player in the NL after Pujols. So that trade offer is dead on arrival.

Sox offered a package, including Buchholz and Ellsbury, for HRam over the offseason. Marlins pretty quickly said no. It's going to take a lot to get him.

Posted by RikkerPKeaton August 9, 09 01:22 PM
  1. Shaking my head at the monitor as I don't know. We are not getting Hanley back, unless as a free agent. I can already think of people writing "he was never coming here, he was mad cause we traded him, he was always going to the Yankees."
We need ashortstop. It might be Lugo the second, but that is better than Lowrey/Green this year and allows us to compete. Scutaro has less range, less over all athletic ability, is truly more of a back up infielder, but mentaly tougher than Guzman.
Theo needed toa ddress team issues in December.

    Posted by joe b. August 9, 09 01:37 PM
  1. Theo never seems to get it right! He's much too conservative, when he has to be aggressive. Pitching is a mess, hitting non-existent. Why is their best hitter of late(Lowell) never in the line-up. Its over!!
Is a shortstop that big of a mystery?
    OMG!!

Posted by ednr August 9, 09 01:38 PM
  1. Im amazed at the arm-chair GMs out there, this is not fantasy baseball, the Marlins are NOT going to give up there franchise player who they control for the next 5+ years for A six inning pitcher in Bucholz,, an injury prone SS who can't hit any pitching (judging his combined stats this and last year), and Bay who is a free agent at the end of this year. I agree that letting Lugo go at this point looks like a bad move but hindsight is 20/20. Guzman is the best option available. These last three months have been an example of a franchise over valuing there prospects. Lowery, Bucholtz, Bowden....etc.

Posted by Reefah August 9, 09 01:38 PM
  1. Sportsbozo1, Boras did not con Theo signing Lugo. Epstein is a big boy and knows what he is doing. The problem is Theo gets obsessed with certain players and will try to get that player no matter what the cost. If Boras was you agent, you would be happy that he gets you every dollar that he can. You may not agree with his tactics, but he is one of the best agents.

  1. Wish all these new, stupid Red Sox "fans" would just shut up. Honestly, Bay, Clay, and Jed for Hanley? You haven't got the slightest clue about baseball. You also botched 2 of the 3 names, luckily Bay is only 3 letters. Stop talking.

  1. Another post touched on this but with Guzman, the Sox will be paying 17M for Guzman and Lowrie next year. SEVENTEEN FRIGGING MILLION DOLLARS! For one second, consider how much dead payroll is on next year's roster ......I'm not considering Dice because I think he is servicable but there is14M for Drew, 13M for Ortiz, 17M for SS and some portion of Lowell's 12.5M. The only way to accomodate such wood is to probably let Bay walk - something that I think is innevitable at this point and dump the 8-9 that Paplebon is due in ARB II. As bad as the roster is right now, it is frightening to think of what is in store for next year.

Posted by Bruinsinruins August 9, 09 02:15 PM

  1. I thought they passed on Orlando Cabrera because he is a "free-swinging" SS! At least O-Cab wouldn't be making errors--I just don't get why they said "no thank you" to him last month. They could have moved him after the season and continued the search in the winter if they are that down on the guy.

  1. Post 33. Most stupid of the week.
florida will lose Bay to free agency after this year, Lowery is hurt and Hanley is signed for cheap bucks. Guz man is no Lugo. Go do some research.

Posted by bobcat August 9, 09 02:35 PM
  1. I've seen Guzman play several times this year in DC, and he's been wholly unimpressive in the field. He has made a number of errors on routine plays, and his range, while not Lugo-like, is not great. He can hit, and he can go on streaks where he bunches hits together. So not much of a mystery with him: Good solid hitter, below average fielder.

Posted by JD August 9, 09 02:40 PM
  1. Anyone want to guess what the Sox payroll will be in 2010 with Guzman? If you assume Bay is resigned for 11M, Varitek's option is picked up for 3M, and Paplebon is retained for something in the neighborhood for 8, the Sox look like they would be on the the hook for 141M. And that assumes Wakefield comes back, Buchholz is the fifth, and a mlb veteran pitcher isn't signed as insurance. There are some places to cut ......they could trade Pap, decline Varitek (although he could plug them) and let Bay walk. But then who plays left? The sox are in a box ....how do you get across this bridge and beyond all this dead wood!

Posted by Lenny August 9, 09 03:01 PM
  1. Face it, this is another stop-gap move to plug a leak in a sinking ship. Theo is a reactive GM rather than someone who can build a roster to last a season. You don't build championship teams with glue and baling wire. This is the third year out of the last four that he has left the team shorthanded when it counts and they will pay the price for it by missing the playoffs. Only a catastrophic collapse by the Rays or Rangers will keep them from overtaking the Sox. The Yankees will complete the sweep and the Rangers will do the same next weekend.

  1. Laura, your comment, "Theo should stop dealing with teams that have been in last place, they are in the bottom for a reason" is stupid. Jason Bay came from a crap team, Beckett and Lowell came from a mostly crap team. In fact most of the time (like 99% of the time) you get good players from crap teams because crap teams have to unload talent/salaries to get good later. Thats how trades work, moron.

You think he has that kind of money just lying around in the Sox' bank account? And who the hell are you going to play in their absence? Slide Josh Reddick into Right? You think he is just going to come up and rake next year? You know how many guys do that? The answer is: NOT MANY! And who will DH? Jeff Bailey? Chris Carter? Lars Frigging Anderson, a guy who will probably have to repeat AA next year? This situation is a giant mess

  1. I lived in the DC area for many years until last summer when I moved back home. Believe me, I watched the Nats most nights and Christian Guzman is not the answer. Every error he makes is at a critical time and kills the team. He can go into a slump that would make Papi and Bay proud. Let's hope if he goes on waivers that of the 26 teams that gets a shot at him before Theo, someone else is dumb enough to claim him

  1. Guys, the trade deadline has passed. It isn't a this for that proposition. Nats want to shed his salary so they put him on waivers. If he clears, we get him. We don't give up anything but pride and money. Now I agree, he sounds like Lugo with a lower batting average. I loved O-Cab and will never understand letting him go for rent a wreck...he must have done or said something to Theo to really piss him off. Gonzo couldn't hit his way out of a paper bag but is easily the best SS any of us will ever see. I'd give my left arm to have him or O-Cab back. Sign this guy and let him swing...somebody has to hit the ball on thi s team to win. The Bruins season can't start soon enough.

Watch your team in your own stadium and let other fans watch their team!

  1. you better not d%%k us around on this one, Cafardo. I've had my eye on this guy all season - he's my fantasy shortstop! with some many good players out there at the July 31st deadline and on waivers right now, if Theo does not start making some serious moves for IMPACT players (not injured, 40 years old, or in AAA), then I seriously question his judgment/cajones.
p.s. when they traded Masterson, I said "shoulda been Buchholz ,they will regret not having a long relief guy in that bullpen" - and what happens 8 days later? Masterson would not have folded like Traber did in that game. he would have kept them in the game,.

  1. I don't understand why Theo gets so many accolades. There is no proof that I see that he can evaluate talent. He signed JD Drew, who has always been injury prone and overpaid him $70M for 5 years when no one else even wanted him. He signed Julio Lugo for $36M for 4 years when his prior season numbers were anemic. While the Yankees were signing CC Sabathia and AJ Burnett, his counter-moves were to pick up John Smoltz and Brad Penny off the trash heap, and those were his biggest offseason moves. He wanted, but knew he would not get Mark Texeira, but spent the offseason courting him anyway, and ended up with nothing.

but we also have to face the facts, we don't seem to have a playoffs caliber team.

  1. Huge mistake getting rid of Masterson. They should have dealt Buckolz for Martinez and another mid-relief. That move will haunt us. Masterson could have stepped in as a starter until Wake or Dice-K make it back. He could aslo have taken over for Smoltz in that horrible last last start. The Sox will miss Masterson. Mistake was keeping Buckholz.

  1. Hanley Ramirez would be my answer. So,the Sox write off this ,so what.Trade for Hanley and build around him.If Theo dosen't,Steinbrenner proberly will. Why keep wasting this money for a bandaid quick fix.One way or another, the money is being wasted

  1. Anyone wondering how the Tigers get Carl Pavano from Cleveland for the proverbial "player to be named later" while the Sox sign Paul Byrd as the answer to their rotation problems? While Pavano is certainly not a long term answer, he seems to be getting back on his feet (10-8 record and 7 shutout innings yesterday) after missing most of the last few years. Not to mention his Yankees connection and that he was the Sox prospect that went to Montreal for Pedro. It seems that if Theo was paying attention he would have learned that the Sox could have gotten a decent back of the rotation veteran while they were negotiating for V. Martinez.

  1. Things are never as good as they seem when they are going well and never as bad as they seem when they are going poorly. Schmoltz was a good gamble that did not work. Good to set him free. Lowrey is hurt which makes his performance inconclusive. Green for a while looked good. Oh well. Martinez is a fine move especially as it might let Veritek snap back a bit. Popi is in trouble, probably terminal. All in all I agree with the "We're number four" chanters. The other chant we might practice is for when the Rays come to town. "Beat New York"

  1. Nice to have V-Mart, but Sox have to replace Masterson somehow. He was needed as a starter, not to mention as a long reliever. Penny and Byrd don't look very promising. Hope Wake makes it back, and Dice-K is able to contribute something this season.

  1. i live in the d.c. area and go to a couple of nats games a year. Guzman is a very good hitter, needs to work on power, but can hit some good hits. fileding is decent but we could put kotchman there for awhile. overall, we MIGHT have another lugo, or we can have a nomar. so its not that biig of a deal. good job theo.

Posted by wikipuff August 9, 09 07:08 PM
  1. I'm a Nats fan and I don't want him to go. I'm still mad they got rid of Nick Johnson. But if you all get him, you will be happy. He is a real pro, he gets on base when you need him to, and he has a joyful spirit. Our loss will be your gain. At least its not to the Yankees or the Phillies...that would have me pulling my hair out by the roots.

Posted by JaneB August 9, 09 07:13 PM
  1. As a Nats fan I wouldn't worry about the errors, every Nat including the usually reliable Zimmerman and Nick Johnson have had a ton of errors this season, losing begets losing. Solid contact hitter with good OBP but his speed isn't what it used to be, that's why his steal numbers are down.

All in all he is still a lot better than what you have now and as far as the Nats are concerned they are just happy to have that albatross of a contract off from around their neck.

  1. How about Bucholtz, Bay, and Lowry for Hanley Ramirez?

    Idiot

Bay is a free agent who the Marlins would never sign. Lowry is on the DL and can't be traded.

Posted by Tasheo Bukkake August 9, 09 07:38 PM
  1. The people who think the Sox could get Hanley Ramirez for Bucholtz and a jar of beans b elong in a group home. Every team would love him and would give both prospects and front line players. The Sox have not been a good judge of players this year. They are getting way too white and need a change in style. No longer is Manny and David Ortiz bashing which means that without replacements for both we need to manufacture runs. Anyone watching baseball knows that the moneyball stuff is outdated already. Look at the Angels. They lost thier slugger, Guerrero and what happens. The lead the league in runs scored. They know how to play the game.

  1. after watching the 2008 postseason it was obvious that the red sox needed to add a few more bats to the lineup....abreu...tejada...and sheffield all could have been easily had....short term solutions and people who have hit near or above .300 for their entire careers....absolutely stupid not to visit those alternatives as teixeira was going to be a long shot at best....we are not witnessing the fruits of epstein's 2008-2009 hot stove non labor....

Posted by RogelioMoret August 9, 09 07:48 PM
  1. I'm all for Guzman if Scutaro is not available. Epstein has done an awful job this year with the off season additions. With the money spent on Penny, Smoltz and Saito combined we could have had Derek Lowe and Bobby Abreu.
Now the Sox have to go get a Shortstop and another starting pitcher (hopefully Arroyo who has pitched in this atmosphere before and isn't on Medicaid).
The Sox better not give up on this season, fix the problem as best as possible.
In the off season re-address trades for Hanley Ramirez and Felix Hernandez.

Posted by james oconnor August 9, 09 07:50 PM

  1. You people ragging on Theo are so far removed from baseball. You act like it's all about buying the best players out there and then...bingo...like magic they play as good a their best season. You sound like Yankees fans. At the end of the day, this is a decent group of players who have played extremely well and who aren't right now. Which team is still ahead in the Yankees/Red Sox match-ups this season? Shut up about giving away the farm, and start ragging on the players who aren't playing up to their potential. They're professioanl ball players who need to get their heads and talents back on the same page. So quit going on about firing Theo. You probably kissed his ring, oh excuse me, rings, when they won those two World Series. Stop being fair weather fans and just wonder WHETHER you're a fan at all...oh yeah I forgot, it's a business, uh huh...jerks. Go Sox, tank the Yanks!

  1. Looking at Fri's and Sat's games, our pitching rotation and bullpen are doing an admirable job given the lack of offense. We could use one more steady reliever to take the pressure off Ramirez and Okajima. If we had OFFENSE we'd have won those games easy. Giving up 2-5 runs over the past week (other than the Thurs game, which was the undoing of Smoltz) is not terrible. We just need to get HITS. The problem has remained the same over the past two years--good pitching, hitters wearing thin. The Yanks are a superior team right now, but I don't care. I believe another team will win the WS.

Was at PETCO Park Fri night hoping to enjoy a nice San Diego evening, but once again, just like my Tues night flight landing when the 13 inning game ended in Tampa, the Sox made it hard for me to ignore them--I was watching the AL scoreboard for the ENTIRE GAME because the Sox-Yanks ended around 1 a.m. ET/10 p.m. PT. Didn't we all know the Yanks would win in the bottom of one of those extra innings? Some consolation: when the game-ending update flashed on the board, the crowd (Pads and Mets fans) let out a collective groan of disappointment.

Gotta admit, the Pads-Mets game looked like AAA compared to the Beasts of the East. BUT... the Pads won the game on a walkoff grand slam. Wish the Sox had that kind of magic.

  1. I may not have ever read a stupider post anywhere than the garbage post here by Ira. Get a clue, friend. When a team of accomplished players goes into a collective slump it is the PLAYERS fault, not the GM. The GM is acknowledged around the game as an extemely talented and shrewd builder of an organization from top to bottom.

Surprised that Theo did not go for Wilson or Scutaro prior to the deadline, since even most of the posters,... when discussing the Sox SS situation, were not sure that Lowrie's wrist would not be a problem....................Everything Theo risked by doing nothing, has turned sour real fast.........and the Ortiz deal has not helped..

  1. Post # 33 -- I'm not sure I'll ever recover from how ignorant that post is.

Red Sox ownership needs to take a breathe.
Here's the deal. Since you cut "the swagger" and offensive "punch" from the team in dealing Manny Ramirez cuz he dared speak out against you....(Oh My Goodness)...(and to anyone who wants to add "Manny shoves Jack McCormick"....well Jim Rice (1988) grabbed Joe Morgan by the jersey and threw him down on the ground of the dugout "during a game"....and we just finished our "bowing-fest" before Rice's feet all year..) -- you are "a team in transition".

Just admit that. Stop acting like "The 2000 Yankees" and searching for desperation. Play this season-out....but in the offseason, open up those purse-strings and spend the money. Stop making The Red Sox the platform for league re-tread experiments (Smoltz, Penny) and let Bay walk. (He has shown the true hack he is....and his Pittsburgh Pirate colors are shining through.)

Go after Matt Holliday for 2010 in the offseason. (And make it work, Holliday has already expressed interest in playing in Boston for 2 years now) -- Pay Him !!
Solidify solid pitching....Go get Roy Halladay in the offseason for 2010. Pay Him !!
Youk @ 3B - Martinez @ (C) with Varitek backup (in Tek's last season, honor that well Red Sox Faithful) -- He gave us a lot, don't forget !!
1B - Stay w/Kotchman but try getting stronger.
DH - Ortiz is still on our books (I say stay with him...) -- BUT -- here comes my bombshell on it all.

    Fire Dave Magadan !!
After '06's collapse, you fired Papa-Jack from the hitting-coach job...and he was with us a while. Bring Him Back !! (He was with us from 2000-2006 (?) off by a year maybe??) -- The team gelled with him. This team is lost under Magadan.

Theo sucks---the most over rated g.m in baseball---ditto Tito as a manager----will someone tell that idiot what Bard does against the Royals, A's and the other losers doesn't mean a thing----two blow saves and three home runs against the Rays and Yankees----by next year Bard will be joing Hansen in Pittsburgh or wherever he is now located becoming another young arm ruined by Tito---it is a disgrace that Delcarmin instead of Bard was not in those spots against the Rays and Yankees----has anyone checked out what Lugo is doing in St. Louis?

the past two seasons and wouldn't spend the money needed to upgrade the
team. They could have had Lowe(he wanted to come)but instead they got
Penny and Smoltz. The offense is very bad(Bay is not Manny),and five starters
are hitting .250 or less?Theo's concept about pitching is great, but you have to
score runs to win.The Sox don't acore runs. The vaunted farm system is
devoid of real talent(no impact players)and is struggling to reach .500.
Time to build arpound Martinez as a catcher and Youk as a firstbaseman.Time
    to bring ui

Hardy will not clear waivers. He is only 26 and was an all star the past 2 seasons. He has 1 year of arbitration left and an affordable contract for a young shortstop with 20+ home run ability. Brewers will want something for him, so they will pull him back to negotiate a trade. This means teams like the D Rays can claim him with no risk of getting stuck with him and block the Sox.
