The Red Sox originally had Mike Lowell playing third base today, but manager Terry Francona talked him out of playing because he felt Lowell had more to lose than to gain by testing his sore right thumb. The ailing thumb is "nothing remotely alarming," Francona said, but he saw no reason for Lowell to take a chance.

So, for the 2009 regular season finale, the Sox will go with almost their full lineup.

Red Sox
1. Jacoby Ellsbury, CF
2. Dustin Pedroia, 2B
3. Victor Martinez, C
4. Kevin Youkilis, 3B
5. David Ortiz, DH
6. Jason Bay, LF
7. J.D. Drew, RF
8. Casey Kotchman, 1B
9. Alex Gonzalez, SS
-- Clay Buchholz, SP

(Pedroia is batting .295. If he goes 4 for 4 today, he would raise his average to .29984, which would be rounded up to an even .300 for the season.)

Indians
1. Luis Valbuena, 2B
2. Trevor Crowe, CF
3. Matt LaPorta, RF
4. Jhonny Peralta, 3B
5. Kelly Shoppach, DH
6. Andy Marte, 1B
7. Wyatt Toregas, C
8 Chris Gimenez, LF
9. Niuman Romero, SS
-- Tomo Ohka, SP
