The Yankees won Game 2 of the ALCS tonight with Jerry Hairston Jr., Brett Gardner and Melky Cabrera manufacturing the winning run.

Oh — and with plenty of help from the suddenly sloppy Angels.

Hairston singled to start the bottom of the 13th inning and went to second on a bunt by Gardner. After Robinson Cano was intentionally walked, Cabrera grounded to second and Maicer Izturis threw the ball away going to second. The ball was to the left of Izturis but he tried to make the difficult play.

“I’m not going to change the way I play, I wanted to be aggressive,” Izturis said. “I take full responsibility.”

But it was a bad play. As manager Mike Scioscia said, go to first for the easy out. That's five errors in two games for the Angels. Where's that team that looked so good against the Red Sox?

Now the Yankees are up 2-0 in the best-of-seven series with Andy Pettitte set for Game 3 on Monday in Anaheim.

Meanwhile wrap your heads around this: Alex Rodriguez is a postseason hero. Once a New York pariah for his failures in October, he has three homers and eight RBI in four postseason games. His home run in the bottom of the 11th tied the game after the Angels had taken the lead.

"I had a blast out there, that was a great game," he said.

It's hard to believe the guy who was disgraced in spring training is a hero seven months later. But a few hits at the right time have a way of doing that.

I'm off to Philadelphia tomorrow for Game 3 of the NLCS and Nick Cafardo will pick up the ALCS in California. Based on the weather, it's a veteran move by Nick to be on the West Coast.
