Bill James, the Red Sox' senior advisor/baseball operations, has been named the 2009 winner of the Judge Emil Fuchs Memorial Award given by the Boston Chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America.

The award, given for long and meritorious service to baseball, has been awarded to Henry Aaron, Commissioner Bud Selig, Red Sox Hall of Fame outfielder Jim Rice, union leader Marvin Miller, and broadcaster Ernie Harwell.

Other Boston BBWAA award winners include Lou Merloni (ex-Red Sox Award) and Casey Kelly (Greg Montalbano Award for Sox minor leaguers).

An awards dinner is scheduled Jan. 14 at the Westin-Waterfront Hotel in South Boston. Tickets are $150. Send checks to Boston Chapter-BBWAA, PO Box 7346, Nashua N.H., 03060.
