Red Sox third baseman Mike Lowell will have surgery on the torn ligament in his right thumb today in Phoenix.

Dr. Donald Sheridan, who performed the surgery on Jed Lowrie's wrist, will operate on Lowell.

Lowell is expected to miss 6-8 weeks recovering.
