The Red Sox had only been on the field for a few minutes today when Mike Cameron informed coach Ron Johnson that he was having trouble getting loose. Once Terry Francona found out, Cameron was walked off the field by medical operations coordinator Jim Rowe. Instead of baseball, he had a day of treatment.

Cameron has a sore left groin and Francona does not plan to use him in Wednesday's split-squad doubleheader against Northeastern and Boston College.

Francona said that Cameron first felt something when the position players had their conditioning test on Tuesday. Cameron denied that, saying it developed over the last few days. Regardless, the Sox are proceeding cautiously.

"It's not something we want to make worse now," Francona said.

Cameron tried to get loose this morning on a stationary bicycle to no avail. "When I went out and stretched, it just wasn't getting loose like I wanted it to," he said. "I guess it's the first sign of me getting a little older."

Cameron said he would play were this the regular season. But since it's Feb. 28, he decided to shut it down. "I listened to my body," Cameron said. "That's the smart thing to do."
