As I pack for tomorrow's flight to Fort Myers, there is one tiny bit of sort-of Red Sox news to pass along to you.

The Mets have signed lefthander Hisanori Takahashi to a minor-league deal. The swingman, who pitched for the Yomiuri Giants last season, has soft stuff but good command. The Sox had shown some interest in him.

Given the astonishing lack of success the Mets have had with Japanese pitchers, Takahashi will either break his arm or give up six runs in his first game. Or both.

Speaking of the Mets, they're cutting down the center field wall by eight feet to encourage more home runs. Good news for Jason Bay. Now if only they could build a giant green wall 310 feet away in left field.
