Red Sox righthander Josh Beckett just spoke about his first start of the Grapefruit League season vs. the Twins at City of Palms Park tonight. Beckett said he felt good about his two-inning stint on the mound and was impressed with the defense he saw behind him.

"I felt like I kept the ball down well," Beckett said after the appearance that saw him give up a run on two hits. "Five ground balls, two hits, one a line drive, the other one a ground ball, so things that we've been working on the last two weeks... I'm getting there."

Beckett said he didn't mind the cool temps in Fort Myers tonight, which was 53 degrees at game time. "I actually enjoy pitching in that," he said. "It keeps you fresh."

Beckett said he was helped by the highly-touted Red Sox defense tonight that included a nifty Scutaro-to-Pedroia-to-Youkilis double play.

"Defense is going to really help us," Beckett said. "With not having to make the perfect pitch in those bad situations for us, behind in the count, guys on base, stuff like that, you feel like you can just make a good pitch and if the ball is put in play you have a good chance of getting some outs."
