FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Couple of quick injury updates from the players who stayed back at City of Palms Park.

Jacoby Ellsbury said he feels "a lot better" after suffering from a mild illness this week. He is planning on working out today, and should be back in the lineup tomorrow.

Gil Velazquez is not quite so fortunate. When he "jammed" his thumb on Tuesday, he actually fractured a bone in the base of his left thumb. He was wearing a brace on it today, and said doctors told him he will be out about six weeks. They will give him an X-ray every two weeks to evaluate him.

The Velazquez injury means that the Sox are very short on infielders. With Jed Lowrie out with mononucleosis and Velazquez out with the fracture, the Sox might need to pick up another utility-type guy. Bill Hall is playing shortstop in Bradenton today, and it will be interesting to see how he does at the position. The Sox seem unsure that Hall could play shortstop for much more than the odd day here and there, but they need to see him more to make a better evaluation.
