Game over: Rays 8, Red Sox 6

Daniel Bard fanned two in the eigthth inning and was throwing smoke. But the Red Sox were not able to get anything going in the bottom of the inning

I would love to give you vivid details of what has transpired in the last two innings but I don't have them. It's been a Nomar kind of day here at the ballpark. But I do know that Okajima tossed a perfect inning and Papelbon pitched well in his inning.

Just returned from the clubhouse. Jason Varitek said he has been away because his father has been ill. He is not sure if he will have to return.

As for Nomar, Varitek and he go back to 1991 when both were at Georgia Tech. "I know his heart has been here since he left," Varitek said."He was a Red Sox and always has been."

Bottom of the 4th, Rays 7, Red Sox 6

Ellsbury just slugged his second HR, a two-run shot to right.

The Sox scored two in the third, one on a Youkilis double and another on a solo homer by Ellsbury. Then we went downstairs to interview Jon Lester (who felt fine, made some adjustments, etc) and upon return saw that the Rays had score six runs in the top of the 4th.

All have been off Adam Mills, who allowed seven hits before he was pulled. Yikes. Bob Ryan, who stayed in the press box, said all but one of the hits was well-hit.

Lester's line: 2.2 innings, 2 hits, 1 run, 0 earned runs, 1 walk, 4 strikeouts. 57 pitches, 33 strikes and much better than last time. ... Price has an "abrasion" on his right palm and returned to the dugout. Thankfully he seems to be OK.

Price was charged with two runs as Cameron (single) and Hall (groundout) had RBI. Lester is back out for a third inning.

Bottom of the 2nd, Rays 1, Red Sox 0

Lester allowed a one-out single in the secod but retired the side. ... Scary moment in the bottom of the inning as Adrian Belte shattered hit bat and a piece hit David Price on his right hand. He left the game with a towel wrapped around his hand. Price walked off under his own power.

Hate to say this, but it's only a matter of time before a player is seriously injured by a shattered bat. It happens far too often.

End of the 1st, Rays 1, Red Sox 0

The Sox went in order against Price.

So much for good pitching and run prevention. Lester walked Bartlett, who stole second and went to third when Brown threw the ball into center. Bartlett then scored when Beltre made a bad throw to first for what should have been the third out.

With all the excitement about Nomar today, almost forgot about the game. We just got underway after Nomar, wearing a white Sox jersey with No. 5 on it, threw out the first pitch.

Please, add your thoughts about Nomar to the post below this. But for now, we have baseball.
