Sox claim Fien, DFA Hernandez

The Red Sox acquired one pitcher via waivers and designated another for assignment today.

Righthander Casey Fien was claimed from the Tigers. Righthander Gaby Hernandez was then designated for assignment

Fien, 26, made his major-league debut for the Tigers last season and was 0-1 with a 7.94 ERA, nine strikeouts and six walks in nine relief appearances. He spent most of the year with Class AAA Toledo where he was 2-1 with 14 saves and a 3.41 ERA. He was picked by the Tigers in the 20th round of the 2006 draft and is expected to report to spring training tomorrow.

Hernandez, 23, was claimed off waivers by Seattle on Feb. 10. He spent all of last year with Triple-A Tacoma and was 10-9 with a 5.23 ERA, 98 strikeouts and 48 walks in 26 starts.
