Former Padres general manager Kevin Towers has decided to take a post with the Yankees according to former Padres beat writer Tom Krasovic, who now works for Fanhouse.

Towers is close friends with both Brian Cashman and Theo Epstein and industry speculation was that he would spend the coming season working for either the Yankees or Red Sox before trying to again become a GM.

The Yankees will pay Towers only $50,000 as the Padres still owe him $1 million. Towers is considered a good evaluator of talent, particularly pitchers.

It's an interesting phenomenon that both the Yankees and the Red Sox, the two powerhouse teams in the game, have so many ties to the low-budget Padres.

Towers was fired last season and replaced with former Epstein assistant Jed Hoyer.
