PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. -- The Red Sox just released a statement saying that Ryan Westmoreland underwent successful surgery to remove a cavernous malformation in his brain today. The surgery was performed by Dr. Robert Spetzler at the Barrow Neurological Institute at St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix.

The procedure lasted five hours, and Westmoreland remains in the intensive care unit, but according to the press release from the Sox "has come through the surgery well."

The release also said that, "Due to the complexity of this surgery, Ryan will face a difficult period initially before beginning his recovery."
