State of the Sox: The Sox have won two straight, four of five, and six of eight to climb into a tie for third place with Toronto. They have not been .500 since April 14. The Sox are 5-3 on the road this season.

Lester vs. the Jays: Here's the breakdown via Baseball-Reference.com.

Cecil vs. the Sox: Here's the breakdown via Baseball-Reference.com. David Ortiz is 1 for 5 with a homer. Mike Lowell is 2 for 5 with a homer. Both have struck out once. Jason Varitek is 2 for 2 with two homers. Both came last May 20 at Fenway Park.

Ready to rock: Lester is 4-3 with a 3.03 ERA in five career starts against Toronto. He has had a rough April, allowing 25 hits and 13 walks over 21.2 innings. But he was less awful against Baltimore in his last outing, throwing 5.2 shutout innings, even through it took 113 pitches. Perhaps that was the start of a good stretch.

Cecil and the Sox: Yikes. He is 0-2 with a 12.00 ERA in two starts. Over nine innings he has allowed 17 hits (seven of them home runs) and five walks.

The Oneders: The last six victories for the Red Sox have come by one run. That last happened in 1943.

Wearing them out: Sox relievers have thrown 71 innings. In the American League, only the Tigers (72.2) have tossed more.

Slowly he rises: J.D. Drew is 7 of his last 23 (.304) with three runs scored and eight RBIs. He has gone from .133 to .161 in six games.

Good stuff: Dustin Pedroia is 8 of his last 19. ... Adrian Beltre has hit in five straight at 8 of 17. ... Marco Scutaro has reached base in 17 of the 21 games.

Bad stuff: Beltre has three errors in his last six games. ... Lefty hitters are 7 of 20 against Scott Schoeneweis. ... Victor Martinez hasn't had an extra-base hit since April 15.

On the iPod right now: Ain't That Pretty At All by The Pixies from the Warren Zevon tribute CD Enjoy Every Sandwich.

Back with much more later on.
