As expected, the Red Sox optioned LHP Felix Doubront back to Triple-A Pawtucket. Righthanded reliever Robert Manuel has been summoned from Pawtucket.

The Sox wanted to see Daisuke Matsuzaka pitch first before making the decision. Matsuzaka threw a 49-pitch simulated game against hitters from the independent league Brockton Rox and looked good. He's scheduled to pitch on Thursday at Colorado.

Manuel, 26, has had an off-the-charts season for Pawtucket. His stats:

26 appearances
36.2 innings
25 hits
4 earned runs
8 walks
31 strikeouts

He was claimed off waivers from Seattle on Nov. 20. From I recall in spring training, Manuel does not throw hard but the ball is hard to pick up coming out of his hand. We'll see how that translates in the big leagues. He appeared in three games for the Reds last season, throwing 4.1 scoreless innings.

Read more about Manuel here from PawSox broadcaster Dan Hoard.

Francona said they're waiting to make a decision on J.D. Drew. It sounds like he will be on the roster today, although knowing the Red Sox they could have an outfield stashed in a hotel room somewhere nearby.

With the day off Monday, the Sox would have three days to see how Drew responds to treatment then make a decision whether he goes with the team to Colorado.
