A few injury updates:

* Kevin Youkilis is out of the lineup for the second time in three games. He was getting over back spasms on Friday and today it's a sore right elbow, the result of getting hit by a pitch yesterday. According to Terry Francona, with the team having tomorrow off, it made sense to give Youkilis an extended break.

* The same is apparently true of Mike Cameron, who did not play yesterday. By not playing today, he can get three days off in a row. "We said we had to manage [his abdominal tear] and we are," Francona said.

* Josh Beckett threw again today, this time going back to 90 feet.

* Daisuke Matsuzaka told the coaches he feels great. Some might question whether the Six acted rashly putting him on the DL. But given his history and how slowly he returns from injuries, it made sense.

* Jeremy Hermida said he's taking a few days off to let his ribs heal. He's hopeful of coming back when's he's eligible. "As soon as I can swing and it doesn't get worse the next day, activate me," he said. "I can deal with some pain as long as I'm not going to make it worse by playing."

* Daniel Nava said he got 140 text messages yesterday and people were asking him for his autograph when he had dinner with his folks at The Capital Grille. Welcome to Boston, Dan.

Here's a tremendous story by Bill Shaikin of the L.A. Times about the late John Wooden and his love of baseball.

Back when I was covering college basketball, I had a chance to meet Coach Wooden at the 1995 Final Four and saw him again a few years ago in Anaheim at a Yankees game. There aren't too many people who have made a bigger impression. I always remember his saying, "Failing to prepare is preparing to fail."
