Joe Torre just held court in the dugout. He seemed happy to be back at Fenway, which he called a "special place."
The fans, he predicted, would give it to Manny good when he comes to the plate. "They like to boo here," he said with a smile. But he didn't think it would he as harsh as the reaction Johnny Damon received.
"Don't forget," Torre said. "He had on the Yankees uniform."
Torre took third base coach Larry Bowa and hitting coach Don Mattingly with him to Los Angeles from New York. His bench coach is Putnam, Conn., native (and former Red Sox farm director) Bob Schaefer.
Schaefer was on the field before the game meeting with some people from the Cape Cod League, where he used to manage.
As for the Manny of the hour, he has not spoken to the media. He arrived at Fenway at 4:10 p.m. on the second bus from the hotel. Other than to say "media out!" when the Dodgers closed the clubhouse, he has been silent.
