State of the Sox: The Sox start the day five games behind the Yankees in the division and three behind the Rays for the wild card with 74 games to go. The Sox won two of three in Toronto before the break but overall they have dropped five of their last seven.

Ranger report: Texas has lost four straight but still lead the AL West by 4.5 games.

Telling stat: The Rangers are 4-14 against teams from the AL East this season. They also are 19-19 on the road. Texas was lost two of three at Fenway in April.

Relief beasts: Daniel Bard's last 10 outings have consisted of 10 shutout innings. He has four hits, no walks and struck out 10. Jonathan Papelbon has thrown 4.1 shutout innings in his last five appearances, allowing one hit and striking out four.

Watch for this: Texas stole 14 bases in that three-game series in April. But Kevin Cash, now catching for the Red Sox, controls the running game pretty well.

Wakefield watch: Tim Wakefield is 10-16 with a 6.09 ERA against Texas in 34 career appearances. He faced them April 20 and allowed six runs on seven hits and five walks in six innings. Vlad Guerrero (10 for 23, 5 homers) hits Wakefield hard.

Hunter happenings: Tommy Hunter is 1-1, 11.74 in two career starts against the Sox. He was rocked at Fenway back in 2008, giving up nine runs in 1.2 innings. Then in 2009 in Texas, he held the Sox to one run over six innings.

Hideki getting hammered: Hideki Okajima has a 6.00 ERA. His previous high at the break was last year at 3.32. His WHIP is 1.889; his previous high at the break was in 2008 at 1.409. His 21 innings are the fewest hes pitched before the break.

Other stuff: Adrian Beltre is 6 of 35 (.171) in his last nine games. ... David Ortiz had 12 homers and 47 RBIs at the break last season. He has 18 homers and 57 RBI this year. ... Kevin Youkilis is hitting .189 with runners in scoring position and two outs. ... Prior to this season Darnell McDonald has played in 68 games for Baltimore, Minnesota, and Cincinnati. McDonald has played in 67 games this season before today.
