According to Alyson Footer of the Astros, the Red Sox have traded infielder Angel Sanchez to Houston for catcher Kevin Cash.

Cash played for the Sox 2007-08. No word yet on whether he is headed to the big leagues at the expense of Gustavo Molina.

Cash, 32, hit .204 with two home runs and four RBIs for the Astros this season before being designated for assignment on June 23 and outrighted to the minor leagues the next day. He spent parts of 2007 and ’08 with the Sox, hitting .207.

Cash’s primary value comes in having caught Tim Wakefield 35 times. Wakefield is starting tomorrow, which could indicate Cash will be added to the roster.

Jason Varitek left Wednesday's game before the ninth inning. No injury was mentioned post-game, but we're checking that possibility.

UPDATE, 9:22 p.m.: The Sox have issued a release confirming the trade but, curiously, did not say where Cash was assigned.

However, Cash has told the Globe's Nick Cafardo that he is on his way to Boston. So presumably he will replace either Gustavo Molina or Jason Varitek on the roster tomorrow.
