Johnny Damon was 2 for 4 with an RBI for Detroit Monday night in a 12-2 victory over Kansas City and told reporters afterward that he was leaning toward staying with the Tigers rather than waive his no-trade rights and accept a trade or waiver claim to join the Red Sox.

"My gut and everything else tells me Detroit's the place for me," he told reporters.

This deadline for the teams to make a deal is Wednesday afternoon, so much could change and Damon could be talked into accepting the move. His comments could be just some negotiating.

If nothing else, the Red Sox may have successfully blocked him from going to the Rays.

Meanwhile, given Damon's comments (see the post earlier tonight), the abuse he received at Fenway the last few years may be playing a role in his decision.
