The Sox have been punched in the gut two days in a row. Yet they remain four games out in the wild card with 45 games to play.

You can look at it two ways: They could be out by two games or they could be out by six. Somehow they ended up in the middle.

Too many bizarre things have happened this season to believe this team will actually get to the playoffs. Bizarre things along with Josh Beckett forgetting how to pitch. But the math says they're still very much in the mix.

Then there are these crazy stats:

* The Sox have played 116 games and 63 of them have been decided by one or two runs. That's 54 percent of the season. They're 33-30 in those games.

* The Sox are only 25-22 in games started by Jon Lester and John Lackey. Yet they're 26-11 in games started by Clay Buchholz and Daisuke Matsuzaka.

Every time I look at the standings, it's amazing they're still second in the wild card.
