Theo Epstein said there wasn't likely to be another deal on the way before tonight's playoff roster deadline. He said the team had been working on a couple of deals which would have made an impact, but neither happened.

"We've been working on a couple of deals that we don't think are going to happen, flukey stuff where some guys got hurt, some guys that we were interested in acquiring, other deals that just don't seem to make sense. So I don't anticipate anything right now though things could change," Epstein said.

Epstein indicated there was no white flag raised with the dealing of Manny Delcarmen for pitching prospect Chris Balcom-Miller, 21, who will report to low Single-A Greenville, because Delcarmen was not pitching important innings out of the Sox pen. The Sox have recalled RHP Robert Manuel from Pawtucket to take Delcarmen's spot on the roster.

Asked if there's an appropriate time to waive the white flag, Epstein said, "That's a tough question. It's kind of like the Supreme Court said about pornography: 'You'll know it when you see it.' Right now, we're not eliminated. We're trying to get really hot."

"It'll be difficult, but not impossible," said Epstein. "I'm not going to sit here and assess how difficult it will be. I'll leave that up to you guys. I think, that, as I just said, we need to play better and get hotter than we've been at any point this season. This is not the position we want to be ion. I'm not going to sit here and blow smoke and say where we want to be. We're not."

Epstein said of Balcom-Miller, "He's a 6-2 kid out of Northern California junior college. Blair Henry, who was our area scout at the time, really liked him. Throws a good downhill fastball with sink. Had a plus changeup as an amateur. We just saw him again this year and now he has a plus slider. So he's got the potential for three average top above average pitches."

Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Eric Patterson will be officially called up to the big league team tomorrow. They are here in Baltimore right now. The Sox may add one or two more to the mix.

Epstein indicated he has been in close contact with first base coach Ron Johnson, who has been home tending to his daughter and family after a tragic situation at home. Epstein will leave it up to Johnson to decide when and if he can return.
