The Red Sox have called up catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia from Triple A Pawtucket. Globe colleague Amalie Benjamin had the news first.

Catcher Kevin Cash is being placed on the disabled list with a hamstring injury.

Saltalamacchia was 5 of 21 for Triple A Pawtucket since being acquired by the Red Sox at the trade deadline. The 25-year-old is a switch hitter who also can play first base. He had two hits and an RBI for Pawtucket last night.

Cash was 8 of 54 (.148) without an RBI over 20 games for the Sox.

Saltalamacchia is an interesting player to have on the roster for several reasons. While his primary job will be to backup Victor Martinez, he also has 38 games of experience at first base in the majors and could fill in for Mike Lowell as well.

The backup first baseman at the moment is Martinez, who obviously can't catch when he's playing first. The Sox do not want Lowell to play every day because of his bad hip, so Saltalamacchia could have a significant role on the team

The other interesting aspect of this move is that the Red Sox start a three-game series in Texas on Friday. Saltalamacchia (along with Beau Jones, Elvis Andrus, Neftali Feliz and Matt Harrison) was one of the players acquired by the Rangers for Mark Teixeira and Ron Mahay in 2007.

It was a fairly brilliant trade for Texas. Andrus is now their shortstop, Feliz their closer and Harrison is 15-9 in parts of three seasons and shown promise.

But Saltalamacchia was the centerpiece of the deal and he was a bust for the Rangers, hitting .243 with 19 homers over parts of four seasons. He played two games early this season before being demoted to Triple A. Saltalamacchia has his issues with the organization and they with him. Texas finally gave up on the one-time hot prospect and traded him to the Red Sox.

Now, perhaps, he'll get a chance to play against his former team this weekend. That will be interesting to watch.
