The Red Sox announced today that they have designated Saturday Oct. 2 as “Thanks, Mike Night” at Fenway Park to honor infielder Mike Lowell as he retires from major league baseball after a 13-year career. The Red Sox host the Yankees that night.

The four-time All-Star will be honored during pregame ceremonies, which will include a special tribute to Lowell’s time in a Red Sox uniform. The three-time World Series champion was named the 2007 World Series MVP after he batted .400 with three doubles and a homer in the four-game sweep of the Colorado Rockies.

The 36-year-old Lowell has been hobbled by injuries and said this month he would retire.

Lowell is in his fifth season with the Sox since being acquired from the Florida Marlins. He has played a total of 299 games in the last three seasons. He is batting .222 with four homers in 67 games this year.

Lowell's career began as a member of the Yankees in 1998, continued with the Marlins from 1999-2005, then with the Red Sox from 2006-2010.

Red Sox fans can participate by attending the game or by posting their well wishes for Lowell at the website http://www.redsox.com/thanksmike.
