With the Red Sox now 7.5 games out of the wild card with 23 games left to play, they have abandoned their plan to start Clay Buchholz on three days' rest tomorrow night. Tim Wakefield will get the call instead.

It could be a lucrative day for Wakefield. Under the terms of his contract, Wakefield's 2011 base salary will go from $1.5 million to $2 million if he pitches 130 innings this season. He has thrown 126.2 so far.

Wakefield also receives bonus payments based on the number of starts he makes over 10. He receives $50,000 for 11-15 games started, $75,000 each for 16-25 games started and $100,000 each for 26-30 games started.

Wakefield has started 17 games. So if he gets 10 outs tomorrow, he'll make a cool $575,000.

That contract worked out well for Wakefield and the Red Sox, at least based on the innings he has provided this season.
