Terry Francona, appearing on WEEI, said that while the Red Sox will miss Victor Martinez, the team can still be successful in 2011.
"The winter has to play itself out and it's just beginning," he said. "Theo and those guys will find a way to put a team together that we feel good about. ... When we get to Fort Myers, we'll be exciting."
Francona seemed to agree with the idea that the Sox were only willing to assume so much risk on Martinez.
"We’re pretty much on the same page on a lot of things," he said. "Wanting to have Victor in the lineup next April is a no-brainer. When you have to make a decision and you’re talking $40, $45, $50 million, four years down the road, that’s not quite as easy. I respect that."
