ORLANDO — Several reports indicate that the Marlins are close to signing free-agent catcher John Buck to a three-year deal.

Buck was a potential Red Sox target if Victor Martinez signed elsewhere.

In my view, not getting Buck is a break. He's a bit of a one-year wonder and investing long-term in him would have been a mistake.

The question now is whether this has any effect on Martinez and the degree to which the Sox will go to retain him.

UPDATE, 5:56 p.m.: Buck got three years and $18 million. The Red Sox, sources said, had little interest in him, especially at that price.
