CAP CANA, Dominican Republic When Daniel Bard heard the Red Sox had acquired Adrian Gonzalez from the Padres, his eyes went wide.

"Was I involved?" he asked.

Assured that he wasn't, Bard breathed a sigh of relief. "That's a great trade for us," he said. "That's really good to hear."

That was the general consensus here today at the David Ortiz Celebrity Golf Tournament at the Punta Espada Golf Club.

Dustin Pedroia said that while regretted the loss of Casey Kelly, Anthony Rizzo and Rey Fuentes to the Padres, the trade made sense for the Sox.

"We saw a lot of Casey in spring training and I know what they think of Rizzo and the other kids," he said. "But that's a good move to get a guy like Adrian.

More from Dustin:

"I'm excited to play alongside him. It's going to be fun. When you hear his name for three years, something might happen. It's awesome to happen now. We picked up a player who's one of the best hitters in the game, so everyone's excited.

"We've got an All-Star. He's outstanding. We're excited and I think everyone's pumped to get to spring training and start everything."

Now the Red Sox will have an infield of Gonzalez, Pedroia, Marco Scutaro and Kevin Youkilis.

"That's a lot of good players," Pedroia said. "We've got to go to work. Once we get to spring training, we've got a lot of work to do to be a great team, but we'll give it our best shot."

The biggest downside in Pedroia's mind was the trade certainly means free agent Adrian Beltre will go elsewhere.

"Adrian was great for us. He's a first-class guy and he plays the game the right way," he said. "Wherever he's going to be, he's going to play great."

Tim Wakefield's take; "Obviously this has been in the works for a long time and it's finally some to fruition. It's a great addition to our club. Not only are we getting a quality player but we're also getting a quality guy."
