A stunning tweet by SI.com's Jon Heyman that the Red Sox actually offered Mariano Rivera more money and years than the 2-year, $30 million deal he's expected to agree to with the Yankees some time on Friday according to the New York Daily News.

What if the Red Sox had landed Rivera? Would they have non-tendered Jonathan Papelbon?

The pursuit of Rivera probably doesn't bode well for Papelbon's future with the team. He's in his final arbitration year and could pull down about $11.5 million this season. While the concentration was on the Red Sox' possible pursuit of Derek Jeter, the team was evidently focusing on another dagger in the Yankees' heart - trying to steal Rivera. Heyman also wrote the Angels were one of the other teams who also offered more years and money.
