Take your pick ... and give up a pick

Here are the available Type A free agents who were offered arbitration and declined. That means signing any of these players would cost a draft pick as compensation

Starting pitchers
Cliff Lee
Carl Pavano

Relievers
Grant Balfour
Scott Downs
Rafael Soriano

Outfielders
Carl Crawford
Jayson Werth

Infielders
Adrian Beltre
Adam Dunn
Paul Konerko

Outside of perhaps Balfour, any of these players would be worth forfeiting a pick to sign. As much as teams value picks in the upcoming draft, adding one of these players would be more valuable.

Now that arbitration has been decided, the pace of signings should start to pick up.

UPDATE, 12:43 p.m.: To clarify this post, I'm not suggesting the Red Sox would want to give up a pick to sign Pavano. I meant that in general for a team in need of a starter. Pavano is untrustworthy at best.

I personally wouldn't give up a pick for Konerko, either. But that's just me. I think you can find 80-85 percent of what he would give you elsewhere.
