According to reports that have been confirmed, the Yankees are out on Cliff Lee and the lefty seems to be headed to the Phillies for five years and $115 million.
The Yankees offered a six-year deal worth $138 million with a option for a seventh year and an additional $16 million according to Buster Olney. But Lee decided to return to Philadelphia for less.
To the best of my memory, the last free agent the Yankees really wanted and didn't get was Greg Maddux.
Now the Yankees turn to Plan B. For the moment, their rotation is CC Sabathia. Phil Hughes, A.J. Burnett, Ivan Nova and nobody.
Presumably the Yankees will make it rain for Andy Pettitte to convince him to play again. One other option might be trading for Zack Greinke.
What a turn of events. On the surface, Lee going back to the NL sure benefits the Red Sox. But never underestimate what the Yankees are capable of.
Meanwhile, the Phillies have Lee, Roy Halladay, Roy Oswalt and Cole Hamels in their rotation. The Four Aces are playing Philadelphia.
