Final: Twins 8, Red Sox 4

Mark Wagner homered in the ninth but the rally fell short. Sox 0-1 this spring.

Top of the 8th: Twins 6, Red Sox 0

Not much has changed here. Headed down to the clubhouse now. Back later with some more.

Top of the 7th: Twins 6, Red Sox 0

Former Sox farmhand Jeff Bailey homered off Dan Wheeler. The Sox have only two hits, both singles. The Twins seemed determined to wrest the Mayor's Cup away from the Sox.

Top of the 6th: Twins 5, Red Sox 0

In a shocking development, Hideki Okajima got rocked, giving up four runs on five hits. Joe Benson had a three-run triple and Nishioka an RBI single. Even in spring training, he's not fooling anybody any more.

Middle of the 5th: Twins 1, Red Sox 0

Kalish walked and stole second with one out. Anderson grounded to second before Iglesias lined to left. I'll be headed down to the clubhouse soon. But we'll have updates until then.

Top of the 5th: Twins 1, Red Sox 0

Solid outing for Buchholz, six up and six down. I had him for 18 pitches, 12 strikes.

Middle of the 4th Twins 1, Red Sox 0

Sox went down 1-2-3 against Dusty Hughes. Ortiz lined to deep right, Youkilis popped to second and Cameron grounded out.

Top of the 4th: Twins 1, Red Sox 0

Strong inning for Buchholz, who retired the side in order on 11 pitches. Butera struck out, Span grounded to short and Nishioka fouled out to the catcher. The main story in the Globe tomorrow will be on Buchholz, who check that out.

Middle of the 3rd: Twins 1, Red Sox 0

The Sox didn't do much against Twins reliever Pat Neshek. McDonald had a single with two outs but Lowrie struck out.

Clay Buchholz into pitch now.

Top of the 3rd: Twins 1, Red Sox 0

Rough inning for Beckett. After getting two outs on five pitches, he allowed a double down the right-field line by Parmelee. Repko followed with a blast to left that McDonald chased back to the wall. His leap kept the ball in the park somehow but it went for an RBI triple. Casilla then lined sharply to right.

I had Beckett for 23 pitches, 15 of them strikes. He faced eight batters and allowed five hard-hit balls.

By the way, Beckett was terrific in spring training last season (22 strikeouts, 5 walks in 19.1 innings) and lousy when it counted. So don't get too carried away with performances here.

Middle of the 2nd: Red Sox 0, Twins 0 Fancy fielding by the Twins in that inning. Youkilis reached on an infield single before Cameron grounded over the bag at second. Nishioka stopped the ball and flipped to second for the force.

Cameron stole second (good sign there) before Saltalamacchia grounded sharply to second. With Cameron on third, Kalish grounded a ball down the line at first that Parmelee made a nice top and fed Pavano for the out.

Top of the 2nd: Red Sox 0, Twins 0 Josh Beckett retired the side in order. Span grounded to second, new Twins media sensation Tsuyoshi Nishioka grounded to short and Jason Kubel flew to center after getting ahead 3-0.

11 pitches, six strikes for Beckett.

Middle of the 1st: Red Sox 0, Twins 0 Carl Pavano struck out Darnell McDonald (looking) and Jed Lowrie (half-swing) before David Ortiz grounded to first.

Having covered Pavano in New York (where he was despised by fans and teammates alike), it's weird seeing how much the Twins love him.

Pregame: Good evening from Hammond Stadium, just across town from City of Palms. Round 1 of the Mayor's Cup is about to get underway. It's the Grapefruit League opener for both clubs.

Only at spring training can you see a man dressed as a giant orange (complete with green pants) stand at attention for the National Anthem. It adds a nice touch of solemnity to the occasion.

Meanwhile, it's 76 degree here. Enjoy the Oscars. But hang out here for game updates.
