FORT MYERS, Fla. Here's on update on the Josh Beckett situation. It sounds like the Red Sox were lucky it wasn't worse.

"He's exhibiting symptoms of mild concussion. He's got a headache. He's been evaluated already," manager Terry Francona said. "We'll get somebody to look at him tonight and then when he comes in tomorrow we'll check on him again to see what level, if any, of a workout he can do or should do. We'll go from there."

Beckett was injured at 11:44 a.m. while shagging flies in left field during batting practice. Ino Guerrero, a coaching staff assistant, picked up a ball and intended to use his fungo bat to knock it toward the ball bucket behind second base.

The ball instead struck Beckett in the left temple. He left the field under his own power with a trainer.

"I bet you it felt like a bolt of lightning," Francona said. "That's not really what you're expecting. It's just a fluke thing. Fortunately it hit Beckett in the head. It was better than hitting him in the shoulder."

Beckett watched a few innings of today's game before being sent home. He is scheduled to pitch on Thursday. It's uncertain whether he will make that start.

"Let's just wait until tomorrow and see how he does," Francona said.
