FORT MYERS, Fla. — The Red Sox play tonight up in Tampa, about three hours north of here. Only a handful of notable players are making the trip: Clay Buchholz, Jason Varitek, Jed Lowrie, Darnell McDonald and Ryan Kalish.
The rest of the regulars will stay back in the Fort and have a brief workout before heading off to golf, fish or spend time with their families. The team has a split-squad doubleheader tomorrow, so everybody will be playing.
Two fairly important events will take place at City of Palms Park. Adrian Gonzalez is scheduled for 70 swings today with the last 10 being on balls pitched to him by a coach. That's a step up from what he has been doing.
Josh Beckett also will throw a three-inning simulated game in the bullpen to make up for the game he missed with a concussion.
Mike Vega will have that news later on. As for me, I'll be on the road to Tampa. Check back later for a report from Steinbrenner Field.
