Game over: Tigers 8, Red Sox 3

Sloppy, poorly pitched game for the Sox, who also left seven runners on base. Now off to Port Charlotte.

Another reason spring stats are screwy: Sox have two games today, the Tigers and Rays had one.

Middle of the 9th: Tigers 8, Red Sox 3

Andy Dirks crushed a two-run homer off Brandon Duckworth.

Top of the 9th: Tigers 6, Red Sox 3

Full disclosure: I did not keep score that inning because I'm working on my story for the paper tomorrow before I head up to Port Charlotte for Game 2. I know Ortiz walked and there were no brawls. Beyond that, I have no idea.

Top of the 8th: Tigers 6 Red Sox 3

Michael Bowden allowed a run on a triple and a passed ball charged to Paul Hoover. The Sox then went in order.

Top of the 7th: Tigers 5, Red Sox 3

Dennys Reyes continued his strong bid for a job, throwing another scoreless inning. Kalish singled and stole second in the bottom of the inning but that was it.

Kalish is 2 for 2 with a walk and two steals. Impressive, particularly considering he is about to head home for his grandfather's funeral.

Top of the 6th: Tigers 5, Red Sox 3

Three walks and a two-run single by Kevin Youkilis closed the gap.The single came after Gonzalez struck out with the bases loaded. Ortiz had a chance to do more damage but struck out.

Middle of the 5th: Tigers 5, Red Sox 1

Forgot Buchholz's line: 4 P, 5 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 1 K, 1 HR, 76 pitches, 41 strikes.

Ugly frame for the Sox. Thorman reached on an infield single that Gonzalez should have had. Jackson then reached on an error by Youkilis. In came Hideki Okajima. Rhymes successfully bunted the runners over. Thomas followed with a grounder to first that Gonzalez booted.

With two outs, Ryan Raburn hit a ball onto the practice field beyond the left field wall. Okajima's rough spring continues: 6 IP, 9 H, 5 ER.

Top of the 5th: Tigers 1, Red Sox 1

Snoozerville inning there. Six up and six down. Buchholz back out for the fifth.

Top of the 4th: Tigers 1, Red Sox 1

Buchholz allowed two singles to start the third then retired the side in order. In the bottom of the inning, a double by Ryan Kalish and walks to Marco Scutaro and Adrian Gonzalez loaded the bases for Kevin Youkilis with two outs, But he grounded to third for the second time in the game. He is 6 for 32 this spring with one extra-base hit. But for a hitter like Youkilis, it only takes a few days to get on track.

Top of the 3rd: Tigers 1, Red Sox 1

Boesch took Buchholz deep to right, the first earned run he has allowed this spring. Kelly singled and Ailva walked with two outs before Thorman lined softly to short.

The Sox went in order in the bottom of the inning. A fire of some sort broke out beyond the right field stands during the inning. The Fort Myers FD arrived and put it out.

Update: A grill was on fire.

Top of the 2nd: Red Sox 1, Tigers 0

Buchholz walked Jackson, who took second on a groundout. When Thomas grounded a ball back to the mound, Buchholz went to first. Jackson tried to take third and Gonzalez threw him out.

In the bottom of the inning, Pedroia homered to left off Scherzer.

Pre-game: Another great day in Fort as the Tigers face the Red Sox. Clay Buchholz will be on the mound.
