ANAHEIM, Calif. That Jason Varitek is catching for the second day in a row does not mean he has become the starter.
Terry Francona explained that he wanted Varitek and Jarrod Saltalamacchia to catch two games each this series. It made sense to keep Varitek with Josh Beckett. Then he will catch Daisuke Matsuzaka on Saturday.
"That gives [Varitek] guys he has done a pretty good job with," Francona said.
Are they sharing the position now? "This weekend," Francona said.
Varitek is 39. Can he handle the physical rigors of catching every other day or more?
"That's something we need to think about," Francona said. "He's not 70. I don't want to run him into the ground. He works hard at being in good shape. ... I just want to make sure we do the right thing."
