Blake Swihart, one of the Red Sox' first-round picks in the 2011 draft (26th overall), was the first catcher selected in this year's draft. Until two years ago, he wasn't even a catcher.

Throughout his youth and into his high school years at Rio Rancho High School and V. Sue Cleveland High in Rio Rancho, NM, he played a variety of positions, including third base and outfield.

During his sophomore year of high school, Swihart transitioned to catcher after a coach recommended the switch. Swihart's coach told him it could help him advance in the sport.

"A switch-hitting catcher sounded pretty good," Swihart told reporters on a conference call this afternoon. "It's working out so far."

Swihart said he's comfortable playing all positions on the field, but he was especially pleased that the Red Sox expressed interest in him being behind the plate.

He committed to play at the University of Texas in the fall, and after a childhood spent as a diehard Longhorn fan, he called playing baseball at Texas "a dream come true." He said going to Texas is "Plan A" at the moment.
